About the Role

The Pattern Maker position, based in the Technical Pattern Shop department, involves crafting wooden patterns specifically for casting processes. This role requires expertise in selecting appropriate wooden materials, adept operation of woodworking machinery, preparation of loft drawings for pattern creation, and ensuring safe practices in wooden pattern manufacturing. The role supports CNC machining operations by fabricating precise wooden patterns.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

• Analyze drawings and pattern design specifications prior to fabrication.
• Create and assemble wooden, resin, and metal patterns along with core boxes following authorized drawings.
• Perform repairs, modifications, and upkeep of existing patterns.
• Conduct dimensional inspections focusing on shrinkage allowance, machining allowance, draft angles, and parting lines to assure quality.
• Assist with trial runs and integrate technical feedback into processes.
• Implement proper pattern identification, storage, and preservation protocols.
• Adhere strictly to safety and housekeeping standards within the pattern shop environment.
• Halt work immediately if drawings, dimensions, materials, or tooling are unclear, and seek clarifications from supervisors or design engineers.
• Reject any damaged or nonconforming raw materials intended for pattern creation.
• Ensure the accuracy of fabricated patterns aligns with approved drawings and maintain safe, organized, and compliant work conditions.

Qualifications and Experience

• Vocational or Diploma qualification in Pattern Making or Carpentry.
• At least five years experience in wooden pattern making.
• Proficiency with woodworking machines.
• Hands-on experience producing patterns for cast iron, cast steel, and products intended for automatic line production.

Technical Knowledge and Skills

• Competency in planning wood pattern fabrication methods.
• Ability to perform accurate dimensional inspections of patterns.
• Understanding of metal materials relevant to the role.
• Familiarity with American Petroleum Institute (API) standards and their application to casting metallurgy.
• Knowledge of API 20A standards and their practical use in materials and manufacturing processes.
