Patient Safety Sitter

Overview

This role is located at Olean General Hospital in Olean, NY, providing direct observation of patients to prevent unsafe behaviors and ensure safety within a clinical environment. The Safety Sitter works under the supervision of a Registered Nurse and focuses on basic patient safety, care, and comfort tasks without administering specialized life-supporting equipment.

Key Responsibilities

• Monitor and redirect patient behaviors to prevent self-harm or removal of medical devices that could interfere with recovery.
• Engage patients verbally through reassurance and reorientation.
• Promptly report any changes in patient behavior or condition to nursing staff.
• Assist patients who may have behavioral health issues including suicidal thoughts, depression, or limited coping skills.
• Collaborate as part of the nursing care team, following direct supervision from the Registered Nurse.

Qualifications and Experience

• High school diploma or equivalent required; healthcare-related education preferred.
• Certification in Heartsaver/First Aid or Basic Life Support (BLS) must be completed within 90 days of hire.
• Completion of Introduction to CPI (Crisis Prevention Intervention) training at orientation.
• Clinical setting experience is preferred.
• Ability to maintain a safe environment tailored to patient age and to communicate effectively about changes in patient behavior.

Working Conditions and Details

• Department: OGH Nursing Administration
• Standard bi-weekly hours: 18.75 hours
• Weekend and holiday work required; on-call not required but includes shift rotations.
• Variable shifts including 3 PM to 11 PM and 3 PM to 3 AM.
• Position is non-union (Union Code: N35) and onsite only.
