About the Role
This position is a 12-month part-time contract commencing immediately, requiring 19.5 hours per week at the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital in Dublin. The Microbiology Department delivers comprehensive clinical microbiology services including bacteriology, mycology, parasitology, tuberculosis, and molecular diagnostics for the hospital and regional general practices.
Responsibilities
- Authorizing laboratory results and communicating critical findings promptly by phone.
- Attending to patient consultations as required.
- Participating in multidisciplinary team meetings (MDTs) including daily intensive care unit MDTs, and specialized MDTs such as vascular, heart and lung transplant, orthopaedic, haematology, and infectious diseases.
- Engagement in departmental meetings.
Training and Development
The registrar role offers excellent training prospects, serving as a pathway to advanced specialist training in clinical microbiology. The registrar will work under close supervision alongside consultant clinical microbiologists and specialist registrars, gaining hands-on experience in infection prevention and control, antimicrobial stewardship, and laboratory management.
Additional learning includes involvement in clinical audits, departmental projects, and active participation in teaching laboratory scientists, infection prevention nurses, and junior hospital doctors.
