Part-Time Academic for TYPR 1100.03: English 1 Course - Fall 2026

Position Overview

This part-time academic role involves instructing TYPR 1100: English 1, a course delivered in person during the Fall 2026 semester at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Classes will take place Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 2:35 PM to 3:25 PM. The position is within the Transition Year Program (TYP), housed under the Faculty of Open Learning and Career Development.

The TYP is an eight-month, full-time initiative designed to support African Nova Scotian and Indigenous students' transition into academic life. Successful completion awards students four academic credits, including English, which count toward their degree programs. Additionally, participants qualify for a tuition waiver covering undergraduate tuition fees.

Responsibilities

• Deliver all instructional activities for TYPR 1100 including lectures and any necessary tutorials.
• Manage grading and administrative duties associated with the course.
• Provide two hours per week of availability outside class for student consultations.
• Report directly to the Director of the Transition Year Program.

Course Content

The curriculum focuses on grammar, foundational essay construction, research and citation methods, argument development, and various writing skills. Literary works from contemporary and historical essayists are included. Note that this course does not fulfill the standard university writing requirement and is exclusively available to Transition Year Program students.

Qualifications

• A Master's degree in English, Education, or a related discipline is mandatory.
• Preferred qualifications include experience with diverse student populations, particularly African Nova Scotian and Indigenous communities.
• Proven success in teaching university-level writing, especially developmental and introductory courses.
• Ability to integrate anti-racist, decolonizing, and equity-focused approaches to pedagogy and curriculum is desirable.

• Compensation follows the CUPE collective agreement.
• Employment depends on sufficient student enrollment and university approval.
