About Chore

Chore is built to remove administrative burden so founders can focus on building rather than managing back-office work. The company positions itself as a remote-first team that helps keep essential operating systems alive for startups, including HR, payroll, compliance, onboarding, documentation, and recurring workflows.

The team values ownership over ego, experimentation over stagnation, merit over pedigree, clarity over complexity, and delight over “just good enough.” It is designed for people who want strong teammates, meaningful operational problems, and rapid growth.

The role is based on remote work, but it requires alignment with U.S. business hours. Candidates should be comfortable working either Eastern Time or Pacific Time consistently.

Role Overview

This is a hands-on operations position where you will manage the back office for U.S. startup founders. Your work will keep client operations running smoothly across HR, payroll, onboarding and offboarding, compliance coordination, documentation, dashboards, and recurring workflows.

In addition to client-facing operations, you will also drive internal strategic projects for Chore itself. That includes building systems, documentation, dashboards, and workflows that reduce friction and help the company scale more efficiently.

What You Will Do

  • Own client back-office operations from start to finish, including HR, payroll, onboarding/offboarding, compliance coordination, documentation, recurring workflows, dashboards, and urgent requests.
  • Lead internal operational projects such as SOP creation, systems design, dashboard building, and process improvements from scoping through delivery.
  • Identify broken or unclear workflows and improve them by rewriting documentation, simplifying repeatable tasks, and suggesting better approaches without waiting to be asked.
  • Communicate updates clearly with structured summaries, early risk flags, and concise context that founders and teammates can act on.
  • Work independently, prioritize effectively, escalate thoughtfully, and take full responsibility for outcomes.

What They Are Looking For

  • Background in back-office or business operations such as HR, payroll, compliance, onboarding, documentation, or managing recurring workflows is a strong advantage.
  • Experience being accountable for results, not only supporting tasks, is especially valuable.
  • A highly proactive mindset with the ability to spot gaps and take ownership end to end.
  • Strong independent problem-solving skills and the ability to think from first principles.
  • Clear written communication and the ability to collaborate effectively with U.S.-based founders and teammates.
  • Fast learning ability across new tools, systems, and business contexts.
  • Comfort staying composed and effective in high-pressure situations.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Annual pay is between $12,000 and $14,000, with no negotiation on the base range.
  • Quarterly bonuses may be earned, up to 30% depending on performance.
  • Pay increases are merit-based and tied to ownership, judgment, and measurable impact.
  • Equity is offered to all team members, with additional grants possible based on performance and tenure.
  • Eligible team members can receive up to a $250 monthly work-from-home stipend and up to a $50 monthly wellness stipend after a 60-day trial period.

Working Conditions

This is a remote role, and you may work from any location as long as you have reliable internet, backup power, and a quiet place to work. The role requires consistent availability during U.S. business hours, either Eastern or Pacific Time, and that requirement is mandatory.

The work is described as high-ambiguity and high-context-switching. You will be expected to create structure yourself, handle multiple clients and stakeholders, receive and give feedback comfortably, and operate with minimal hand-holding.

The first 60 days are treated as a fully paid trial period. During that period, success means confidently handling core client workflows with limited oversight and communicating proactively with founders and teammates.

Application Process

Applicants must complete three required steps: an AI interview, the application form, and a confirmation email.

  • Complete the AI interview before submitting the form.
  • Submit the application through the form and include a Google Drive folder link containing PDF files only.
  • Name the folder in the format: .
  • Name the resume file in the format: .
  • After submitting the form, email the Google Drive folder link using the subject line: “Full Name | Operations Specialist Application”.
  • The confirmation email should be sent to recruiting+os@hirechore.com.
  • The email must confirm whether you are comfortable with U.S. working hours, high ambiguity and self-direction, frequent context switching, the 60-day trial period, and the stated compensation.
  • You should also indicate whether you have applied to Chore before.

Selection Process

  • Applications are reviewed by the team.
  • Shortlisted candidates are invited to complete a paid assignment.
  • Final-stage candidates go through three interview rounds.

Additional Information

Chore emphasizes that it cares more about what candidates can do than where they studied or previously worked. The company is looking for people who are hungry, thoughtful, sharp, and motivated by difficult operational problems.

Employees are expected to align with values such as delighting stakeholders, rewarding real impact, adapting through experimentation, and assuming good intentions while fixing issues proactively.

The role is intended for people who want strong ownership, meaningful visibility into how U.S. startups operate, and the opportunity to contribute across operations, product, marketing, and leadership discussions as they grow.

The company also notes that team members may begin by partnering with a U.S.-based teammate, later own their own client portfolio, and eventually lead internal strategic initiatives independently.
