Job description

Role overview

HMP Guys Marsh is looking for an Operational Support Grade to help keep the prison operating safely and efficiently each day. This is a hands-on support position within a busy prison environment, where you’ll work with a team across a range of duties.

What the job involves

The role covers a wide mix of responsibilities, including security checks and searches at the gate, handling incoming deliveries, overseeing visitors, and keeping an eye on phone activity and CCTV. The work combines desk-based tasks with active duties such as lifting, carrying, and walking escort vehicles across the prison grounds.

Who this role suits

No formal qualifications are needed. The ideal candidate is a clear communicator who stays composed under pressure, uses good judgement, and works well as part of a team. The role is fast-paced and could be a strong starting point for someone building a career in this area.

Working pattern

You’ll be expected to work different shift patterns, including nights and weekends, to help maintain continuous operations.

Impact and progression

This position offers the chance to support public protection and contribute to the work carried out across the prison estate. Although contact with prisoners is limited compared with prison officers, some occasional interaction may occur depending on the site. The role also builds practical knowledge of prison operations and may open the door to other prison jobs, including the OSG to Prison Officer conversion route.

Training and development

You’ll receive training along with opportunities to progress and develop within the service.

Pay and benefits

The advertised salary is £29,432. In addition to base pay, the package includes 25 days of annual leave on appointment, rising to 30 days after 10 years of service, calculated pro rata. You will also receive 9 days of bank, public and privilege holidays, access to a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service, the Civil Service pension scheme, season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme, and a Cycle to Work scheme.

Leave it if you'd like a reply — we won't use it for anything else.
