Role Purpose
The Stateroom Steward/ess is responsible for delivering professional, personalized housekeeping service to guests at all times. The role focuses on maintaining excellent cleanliness and consistency in guest staterooms while ensuring a high standard of customer care. A welcoming, guest-first approach is essential to help drive guest loyalty and business results.
Key Responsibilities
- Clean 15 to 20 staterooms twice a day, including bed making, vacuuming, dusting, veranda cleaning, bathroom, toilet, window, and mirror cleaning, plus restocking linens, towels, and room supplies.
- Understand all areas of the stateroom and be ready to support and direct the Assistant Stateroom Steward when needed.
- Keep staterooms in good working condition and report defects for repair through the shipboard reporting system; replace glassware and coffee machines as required.
- Protect guest privacy and security, and handle guest complaints with professionalism.
- Deliver ice, handle laundry pickup and delivery, and provide shoeshine service for guests.
- Use cleaning materials, chemicals, and housekeeping tools correctly; remove garbage, separate waste properly, and maintain public health standards at all times.
- Assist with luggage duties during embarkation and disembarkation.
- Attend the daily team briefing to stay aligned with operational needs and STAR Service expectations.
- Maintain exceptional comfort, cleanliness, and hygiene in assigned areas while preparing service around guest movement, embarkation/disembarkation, sea days, and onboard activities.
- Wear required PPE, follow safe lifting methods, and work safely onboard.
- Maintain grooming and uniform standards in line with Viking’s image requirements.
- Protect company property, especially during rough weather, to avoid loss or damage.
- Remain flexible with working hours, handle pressure well, and consistently present a positive, professional image.
- Learn about ports of call, shore excursions, entertainment, and onboard programs.
- Support department goals related to quality and financial performance.
- Follow safety, security, environmental, and public health procedures, and take part in required onboard training, fire prevention, and evacuation drills.
- Manage stateroom minibars during each cruise when requested by the Executive Housekeeper.
- Assist other departments and complete additional tasks assigned by supervisors.
Profile Required
- At least 2 years of experience as a Stateroom Steward/ess or in a similar position is required.
- Prior work in a high-standard guest service and cleanliness environment is necessary, including premium ship experience and previous cruise industry exposure.
- Experience handling the cleaning of 15 to 20 rooms twice daily is required.
- Applicants must be capable of extensive walking, long periods of standing, and physically handling 50+ lbs.
- Strong English communication skills are needed to interact with native English-speaking guests.
- The role requires a guest-first mindset, a service-oriented attitude, a positive personality, a polished appearance, and excellent hygiene.
- Confidential information must be handled with discretion and professionalism.
- Comfort working with chemicals, hazardous materials, and cleaning equipment is essential.
- A thorough understanding of public health and sanitary compliance standards is required.
