Job description

About the company

Chemsafety is a well-regarded New Zealand-owned consultancy focused on occupational hygiene, asbestos management, and hazardous substance compliance for clients throughout the country. The business is built around the values of Caring, Trust, Excellence, and Passion, and works with employers to identify, understand, and reduce health risks in the workplace.

Role overview

This is a practical, client-facing consulting position based in Christchurch for either a science graduate or an experienced Occupational Hygienist. The work will suit someone who enjoys hands-on technical tasks, problem-solving, and giving straightforward advice that helps clients manage workplace exposure hazards and control measures.

Key duties

The role covers a broad range of occupational hygiene activities, with projects varying across New Zealand. You may carry out exposure monitoring for dust, fumes, and chemicals, perform respirator fit testing, conduct noise surveys, and complete workplace health risk assessments.

Some asbestos-related responsibilities are also expected, such as collecting samples, undertaking air monitoring, completing surveys, and issuing clearance certification.

Qualifications and experience

A relevant tertiary qualification is required in occupational hygiene, health and safety, or a science discipline such as chemistry or a closely related field. Prior occupational hygiene experience or formal qualifications would be an advantage, although the company is prepared to provide training and support where needed.

Asbestos credentials, including LAA status or BOHS IP402, IP404, or IP405, are helpful but not mandatory.

Additional requirements

The successful candidate must hold a current driver licence and have either New Zealand residency or a valid New Zealand work permit. Strong written and spoken communication skills are essential, along with the ability to work independently as well as collaborate effectively within a team.

You should be comfortable analysing complex situations, simplifying them into practical steps, and helping clients put workable solutions in place.

What the company offers

Chemsafety offers a flexible, supportive, and enjoyable work environment, along with solid in-house training and external learning opportunities where appropriate. The role also provides career development prospects and the chance to contribute to a variety of interesting projects nationwide.

Work location and travel

The position is based in Christchurch and includes travel across New Zealand to deliver services to clients.
