Job description
Role overview
This permanent, pensionable role sits within the Facilities & Premises Management department at Head Office – Support Functions in Lusaka. The position is part of the Operations Division and supports the Bank’s broader strategic direction by strengthening occupational health, safety, environmental, and facilities controls across the organisation.
Job purpose
The main objective of the role is to safeguard employee health, safety, and overall well-being while supporting productivity and ensuring compliance with legal and regulatory obligations. The role also involves building, maintaining, and improving the Bank’s OHS framework and policy, carrying out risk assessments, and documenting inspections across bank facilities. A key part of the job is investigating incidents such as workplace accidents and near misses to determine root causes and put preventive actions in place.
Occupational health, safety, and ESG responsibilities
- Implement and monitor compliance with the organisation’s ESG and OHS management policies.
- Help create and maintain a safe, healthy, and functional workplace environment, including furniture, office conditions, sanitation, waste control, and cleanliness.
- Oversee the procurement, upkeep, and distribution of OHS and ESG-related equipment and supplies.
- Contribute to better cost management within facilities operations.
- Inspect all bank premises, record ESG and OHS observations, and coordinate closure of findings with repairs, contracting, and maintenance teams.
- Ensure all branches and offices remain clean and that housekeeping standards are consistently upheld.
- Carry out ESG and OHS audits across the branch network, document findings, and follow through until issues are closed.
- Prepare requisition and tender documents for ESG and OHS requirements for review by the supervisor.
- Supervise and coordinate contractors, confirm that work has been completed properly, and follow up on any gaps or defects to ensure service level agreements are met.
- Respond effectively to occupational health and safety incidents and emergencies and help deliver practical solutions.
- Organise and conduct ESG and OHS awareness sessions, training, and toolbox talks, while maintaining proper records.
- Handle regulator-related correspondence in a timely manner.
- Support water and sanitation requirements by ensuring a consistent water supply for staff and customers in line with Bank of Zambia regulations and by maintaining sanitary conditions.
- Perform any other duties assigned by management.
Risk management responsibilities
- Identify, assess, report, and record all relevant risks in the risk register.
- Submit accurate and complete risk-event reports within the required timelines.
- Escalate new or emerging risks and put appropriate mitigation measures in place.
- Track, monitor, and report key risk indicators within the department.
- Operate within approved risk appetite levels and report any breaches without delay.
- Implement and close audit actions, control weaknesses, RCSA findings, consultancy recommendations, and issues arising from customer complaints or risk events.
- Take part in annual reviews of procedure manuals when required.
- Follow the Bank’s enterprise risk management framework and participate in risk training arranged by IRM.
Requirements
- A degree or diploma in Engineering, Environmental Health, Business, or a related field.
- Strong analytical ability and a solid understanding of local regulations.
- Experience in strategic stakeholder management, including handling competing priorities and complex decision-making situations.
