Job description

Company Overview

UNFPA Ethiopia serves as the country office of the United Nations Population Fund. Its work centers on ensuring pregnancies are intended, childbirth is safe, and young people can realize their potential. The office collaborates with government bodies, civil society organizations, and local communities to advance sexual and reproductive health and rights, gender equality, and better use of population data. It supports policies and programs grounded in evidence that strengthen health services and safeguard the rights and dignity of marginalized groups. The organization emphasizes professionalism, accountability, and teamwork, and provides an opportunity to contribute to meaningful development and humanitarian work across Ethiopia.

Role Overview

The News Specialist is a full-time remote position focused on developing news content that showcases UNFPA Ethiopia’s programs, results, and advocacy work. The role covers planning, researching, and writing news stories, press releases, and feature articles for both digital and print-oriented channels, while keeping all content consistent with UNFPA communication standards and messaging.

Core Work

  • Create news stories, press releases, and feature pieces for a range of media platforms.
  • Track national and international news relevant to UNFPA’s mandate and identify timely story opportunities.
  • Work with program teams to collect accurate facts, data, and human-interest angles.
  • Coordinate with communications and media partners to support broadcast, online, and social media distribution.
  • Edit copy, verify facts, and keep a structured content calendar for events, campaigns, and urgent updates.

Qualifications and Experience

Applicants should bring strong news-writing and broadcasting ability, excellent written and verbal communication, solid research skills, and experience working with journalists, editors, or broadcasters. The position also calls for sound editorial judgment, strong attention to detail, and the ability to work under tight deadlines. Familiarity with digital publishing tools, content management systems, and social media communication is expected. Knowledge of development, humanitarian, or public health topics, especially in the Ethiopian or regional context, is an advantage. A university degree in Journalism, Communications, Media Studies, International Relations, or a related discipline is highly desirable, along with prior experience in news or media production.
