Job description
Role overview
BDO Ireland’s Entrepreneurial Services team partners with start-up and scale-up businesses across a wide mix of sectors, providing accounting, compliance and advisory support tailored to fast-growing founder-led companies. The work focuses on helping clients establish solid financial foundations, sharpen reporting, prepare for fundraising and support expansion.
This opportunity is aimed at a newly qualified accountant who wants to do more than routine finance work. The ideal person will be interested in how early-stage and growing businesses operate, how commercial decisions are made, and how reliable financial information can shape strategy, fundraising and long-term growth.
Key responsibilities
- Deliver accounting support to start-up and scale-up clients, including oversight of bookkeeping, month-end close activities, reconciliations and management reporting.
- Produce accurate and timely financial information that helps clients understand performance, cash flow, runway and the main drivers behind their results.
- Assist with statutory compliance tasks such as VAT, payroll-related finance inputs, annual accounts and coordination of corporation tax matters where needed.
- Help prepare board packs, investor updates, KPI dashboards and other decision-ready materials for founders and leadership teams.
- Work closely with clients to understand their business model, revenue streams, cost structure, funding position and operational priorities.
- Evaluate finance tools and technologies that can reduce repetitive work and improve processes such as invoice handling, reconciliations, expense management, approvals, reporting and month-end close.
- Contribute to finance process improvement projects by spotting manual or duplicated tasks, documenting workflows and supporting practical, technology-enabled solutions.
- Coordinate with wider BDO specialists in tax, company secretarial, transaction services and advisory to give clients integrated support.
- Assist with onboarding new clients by collecting financial data, understanding systems and identifying immediate risks or priorities.
- Support senior colleagues on forecasting, budgeting, cash flow planning and fundraising-readiness work.
- Develop strong relationships with founders, finance leads and client teams through clear communication and practical support.
Requirements
- Recently qualified accountant with ACA, ACCA or an equivalent qualification and a solid technical accounting background.
- Previous experience in practice, industry, outsourced finance, audit or advisory, ideally with exposure to SMEs, start-ups or high-growth businesses.
- Strong interest in how businesses work commercially, not only in the preparation of financial statements.
- Ability to manage multiple clients, deadlines and priorities in a fast-moving environment.
- Strong Excel and financial systems capability, with interest in finance technology, automation and data-led reporting.
- Clear communication skills and the ability to turn financial information into practical insights for clients.
- Curiosity, initiative and a willingness to ask questions to understand the wider business context behind the numbers.
- High attention to detail and accountability for the accuracy and quality of deliverables.
- Commercial awareness with interest in start-up and scale-up journeys, funding stages and the challenges of growing a business.
- Understanding of the financial realities of growing companies, including cash flow, runway, cost control, revenue models and performance measures.
- Interest in new tools and technologies that can cut manual work, improve accuracy and strengthen finance processes.
- Awareness of Ireland’s broader entrepreneurial ecosystem, including Enterprise Ireland, accelerators, venture capital and advisory networks, or a willingness to build that knowledge over time.
