Job description
Role Overview
The Newbuilding Estimator supports shipyard new-build projects by building precise cost forecasts for vessel construction. The role centers on evaluating technical inputs, studying shipbuilding drawings, and assembling detailed budgets that cover labor, materials, subcontracted work, and equipment. This position is important for competitive tendering, cost management, and project planning.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop comprehensive cost estimates for new vessel construction, covering hull work, outfitting, machinery, painting, accommodation, and commissioning stages.
- Examine general arrangement drawings, technical specifications, class requirements, and client documentation to clearly define the project scope.
- Carry out quantity take-offs and material assessments using 2D and 3D design packages.
- Request, compare, and assess quotations from vendors and subcontractors for major systems such as propulsion, HVAC, and electrical installations.
- Work out man-hour requirements using standard productivity norms and shipyard historical records across trades including hull, piping, and electrical.
- Partner with the commercial team to shape pricing approach, contingency provisions, and target profit levels.
- Identify estimate risks and uncertainties, then recommend mitigation actions or contingency allowances.
- Keep cost records current, including material pricing, labor rates, and productivity data from completed projects.
- Assist in preparing technical and commercial submissions for customers.
Qualifications and Skills
The ideal candidate should hold a bachelor’s degree in Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, or a closely related discipline, along with at least 5 years of estimating experience in a shipyard or marine engineering setting. A solid grasp of shipbuilding methods, material usage, and compliance requirements such as IMO, SOLAS, and classification rules is expected. Familiarity with shipbuilding estimation tools and software, including AutoCAD, Ship Constructor, Excel, and ERP platforms, is important. Strong analytical ability, cost modelling capability, and effective communication skills are also needed to work smoothly with engineering, procurement, and production teams.
