Role Overview
Join Mackay Regional Council's Facilities & Open Spaces team to protect, restore, and enrich the natural landscapes across the Mackay region including beaches, bushland, coastal reserves, and natural areas. This practical outdoor position involves hands-on work to enhance the environment's health, appearance, and long-term sustainability.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out vegetation management, habitat restoration, weed eradication, brush cutting, revegetation, and ecosystem care activities.
- Maintain natural area infrastructure such as fences, minor repairs, assets, amenities, and community facilities.
- Operate and upkeep small machinery, power tools, and equipment related to natural area maintenance.
- Maintain thorough daily records, undertake pre-start checklists, process work order requests, and manage documentation accurately.
- Collaborate effectively with team members, contractors, volunteers, and community groups.
- Utilize technology for communication, data recording, and managing work tasks.
- Assist in scheduled maintenance, project implementation, and emergency management when required.
- Deliver excellent customer service and uphold the Council’s professional image.
Candidate Profile
Individuals passionate about environmental protection, comfortable working outdoors in various weather and terrain conditions, safety conscious, and able to work collaboratively in a small team will thrive in this role. Experience in managing weeds and vegetation using herbicides and pesticides, as well as knowledge of restoration techniques, are essential.
Mandatory Qualifications and Experience
- Possession of a current Queensland “C” Class Driver Licence or interstate equivalent.
- Construction White Card certification.
- Chainsaw operation certification (Level 1).
- Chemical Accreditation at AQF Level 3.
- Relevant practical experience with weed control, herbicide and pesticide application, and vegetation restoration.
Preferred Qualifications
- Certificate II in Conservation and Land Management.
- ACDC Commercial Operators Licence.
- Understanding of vegetation and ecosystem management, including habitat restoration methods.
- Familiarity with natural environment issues.
- Competency in maintaining accurate records compliant with legislation.
