Job description

Role overview

The Detroit Pistons are seeking a part-time mascot performer to bring the Motor City Cruise mascot, Nitro, to life at home games, team functions, and select off-site appearances. This role represents the brand in front of fans and the community, combining entertainment, energy, and strong non-verbal performance skills.

The ideal person is physically fit, creative, humorous, and comfortable performing without dialogue while engaging crowds of all ages. This assignment begins in Summer 2026 and runs through the end of June 2027.

Key responsibilities

  • Serve as Nitro at Cruise home games and selected community or team events, taking charge of the mascot experience.
  • Support game-day entertainment through fan interaction, court-side participation, contests, T-shirt throws, and similar activities.
  • Develop fresh mascot bits and skits for use during Cruise games.
  • Keep mascot-related items in good condition by cleaning and maintaining costumes, props, and related materials.
  • Coordinate with the Game Ops manager to arrange a substitute performer when needed.
  • Help order props, costumes, and other mascot program supplies.
  • Partner with the Community and Social Responsibility team to bring Nitro into outreach events and programming.
  • Work with the Social Media coordinator to record content and create mascot-focused videos.
  • Learn from the Pistons Hooper mascot performer to build a deeper understanding of professional mascot work, including technique, brand approach, and performance standards.
  • Shadow Hooper at selected Pistons games when requested and potentially step in as backup performer.

Candidate profile

  • Prior mascot experience is required, with collegiate, minor league, or professional experience preferred.
  • Performance background such as dance, tumbling, belaying, stilt-walking, or similar skills is an advantage.
  • Must be able to energize and entertain audiences and bring a strong sense of humor to the role.
  • Availability is needed for office-based work, community appearances, game days, and external Cruise events.
  • The mascot suit is built for someone roughly between 5'5" and 5'10".
  • Must be able to stay physically active and lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Flexibility to work long shifts, including evenings, weekends, and some holidays, is required.
