Role Overview

We are currently hiring a Mortgage Underwriter holding active FHA Direct Endorsement (DE) and VA Staff Appraisal Reviewer (SAR) certifications. This fully remote position involves independent decision-making on FHA, VA, and Conventional mortgage products, directly impacting $20-$30 million in monthly loan production while maintaining loan quality and risk management.

Key Duties

Perform independent underwriting assessments of FHA, VA, and Conventional mortgage loan applications following agency, investor, and company guidelines.
Evaluate borrower credit profiles, collateral, income, assets, and automated underwriting system outputs such as Desktop Underwriter (DU) and Loan Product Advisor (LP).
Prepare precise loan analysis and summary documentation.
Downgrade loans to manual underwriting when necessary.
Review complex income, including self-employed borrower tax returns.
Verify assets, reserves, gift funds, and pertinent documentation.
Accurately calculate loan amounts for Rate and Term or Streamline Refinance loans.
Identify and correct HUD-1 settlement statement discrepancies.
Maintain up-to-date knowledge of FHA, VA, agency, and investor regulatory changes, including mortgagee letters and federal lending rules.
Consistently achieve underwriting production and quality targets with high accuracy.

Required Qualifications and Skills

Active FHA Direct Endorsement (DE) certification with valid CHUMS ID.
Active VA Staff Appraisal Reviewer (SAR) certification.
At least 24 months of direct FHA loan underwriting experience.
Extensive underwriting expertise in FHA, VA, and Conventional mortgages.
Proficiency in Desktop Underwriter (DU) and Loan Product Advisor (LP) tools.
Comprehensive understanding of mortgage compliance, including MDIA, RESPA Reform, Appraisal Independence Requirements, and HVCC.
Excellent analytical, written, and verbal communication skills.
Exceptional attention to detail and ability to make independent credit decisions.
Proven record of meeting or exceeding underwriting production goals.

Technical Competencies

Advanced skills with Adobe Acrobat.
Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office and Google Workspace.
Experience with mortgage loan origination and underwriting systems.
High computer literacy and proficient typing skills.

Compensation

Salary ranges from $110,000 to $150,000 annually, dependent on experience and qualifications.
