Job description
Role overview
RAC is hiring a Mobile Vehicle Technician for its Service, Maintenance & Repair (SMR) division in Ashford. This is a mobile, scheduled-repair role focused on planned servicing and workshop-style repairs carried out at members’ homes, workplaces, and other pre-arranged locations.
Pay and hours
- Base pay is £40,178 per year, with on-target earnings reaching up to £52,000.
- There is a guaranteed overtime option that can lift your base pay, along with further overtime and bonus earning opportunities.
- The position is for 40 hours each week.
- Core working hours are 8:30 am to 5:00 pm, and you will work one Saturday in four.
Where you’ll be working
You will cover the Ashford cluster, including Ashford, Folkestone, Dover, Hythe, New Romney, and Lydd. The role is field-based, with a structured diary of pre-booked appointments rather than reactive breakdown callouts.
About the SMR division
This is a different kind of RAC role. The SMR team focuses on planned maintenance and repairs, not roadside rescue. Jobs are organised in advance, giving you the time, equipment, and support needed to complete high-quality work without the unpredictability of emergency shifts or recovery work.
What the job involves
- Perform scheduled vehicle servicing.
- Use advanced mobile diagnostic equipment to identify faults.
- Complete more complex repairs that would usually be done in a workshop.
- Provide members with practical advice and recommendations after inspection.
- Carry out vehicle safety checks to RAC standards.
- Work from a daily digital schedule of pre-arranged jobs.
Tools and support provided
From day one, you will receive a fully equipped RAC van, fuel card, uniform, complete tool set, and advanced diagnostic equipment. The role is designed to let you use your technical knowledge and problem-solving skills to help members safely and efficiently.
Why this role stands out
- Pre-scheduled appointments instead of emergency callouts.
- Stable, predictable workflow rather than irregular demands.
- Proper repair work instead of temporary roadside fixes.
- Built-in support for parts ordering and job completion.
- A clear mobile service platform to manage your schedule.
Requirements
- A Level 2 qualification in Light Vehicle Maintenance, or an equivalent qualification.
- At least 2 years of experience working as a vehicle technician on light vehicles.
- A full UK driving licence with fewer than 6 penalty points.
Who this role suits
This opportunity is ideal for someone who enjoys independence, variety, and hands-on problem solving. You should be confident dealing with members directly, making decisions on the spot, and using your technical ability to deliver a reassuring, high-quality service.
Benefits and perks
- Competitive earnings, including bonuses and premium-rate overtime.
- An optional guaranteed overtime arrangement available after your first month, paid at £30 per hour for extra rest-day work.
- A free RAC Ultimate Complete Breakdown Service from day one.
- Access to a car salary sacrifice scheme, including electric vehicle options, after 12 months.
- 23 days of annual leave, rising to 25 days with service, plus bank holidays.
- Paid family leave, flexible working support, and practical help for personal commitments.
- Pension contributions matched up to 6.5%.
- Life assurance cover of up to 4x salary, with an optional increase to 10x through flex benefits.
- 24/7 confidential support for you and household members aged 16 and over.
- Access to Orange Savings discounts across retail, travel, tools, technology, and more.
- Automatic entry into the Colleague Share Scheme after probation.
