Role Overview
The Microbiology Laboratory Technician II will carry out routine microbiological testing on raw materials, in-process samples, finished products, water samples, validation samples, and environmental monitoring in classified areas and compressed gases. The role also involves preparing GMP documentation, documenting results, writing reports, conducting investigations, and reviewing laboratory raw data.
Key Duties
- Carry out bioburden testing on raw materials, in-process products, finished products, waters, and validation samples using membrane filtration or direct methods.
- Perform endotoxin testing on raw materials, in-process products, finished products, waters, validation samples, and components using Gel Clot or Kinetic methods.
- Test finished product samples and components for sterility.
- Conduct environmental monitoring across classified areas and compressed gases.
- Identify microorganisms down to species level.
- Perform growth promotion and sterility checks on microbiological media.
- Support process qualification and stability programs.
- Carry out test method validation work for bioburden, endotoxin, and bacteriostasis/fungistasis, and help prepare the related reports.
- Review results from environmental and personnel monitoring plates from classified areas.
- Review results from microbiological assays such as bioburden and sterility testing.
- Track and trend microbiological, environmental, and personnel monitoring results.
- Inspect media fills.
- Monitor stock levels of media plates and testing consumables and place orders when needed.
- Train other team members when required and ensure training records are properly completed.
- Perform container closure integrity testing.
- Support the microbiology laboratory calibration schedule.
- Prepare laboratory investigation reports as assigned.
- Prepare Grade C and Grade D environmental monitoring trend reports and WFI summary reports as assigned.
- Review raw data and laboratory logbooks as assigned.
Experience and Qualifications
The ideal candidate should hold at least a bachelor’s degree, or an equivalent qualification, in a science-related subject, preferably microbiology, along with 2 to 4 years of experience in the microbiology function of a pharmaceutical company.
The role requires the ability to perform sterility, bioburden, and endotoxin testing, as well as the skill to prepare and execute detailed investigation reports using risk analysis tools. Experience working in an FDA- and HPRA-regulated environment is essential, along with familiarity with environmental monitoring requirements in a sterile manufacturing setting. A third-level level of mathematics ability is also required, together with strong attention to detail and good computer literacy in Word and Excel.
