Job description
About Velo University
Velo University (VeloU) is a leading baseball development organization focused on helping athletes grow over the long term. Its approach combines throwing development, strength and conditioning, recovery, and advanced athlete evaluation, backed by coaching expertise, technology, and support systems. The goal is to help athletes perform at their best both on and off the field.
Within VeloU, the Black Label Program is the organization’s top-tier athlete development track. It is built for highly driven athletes targeting collegiate and professional opportunities, and it brings together a full support team that includes performance coaches, nutrition support, recovery specialists, recruiting guidance, and mental performance coaching. These athletes are commonly being assessed, recruited, and competing at the highest amateur levels, so every part of development matters.
VeloU emphasizes training the whole athlete. Along with physical development, the ability to handle pressure, stay confident, and compete consistently can be the difference-maker in an athlete’s long-term ceiling. As the Black Label program expands, the organization is looking for a dedicated Mental Performance Coach to help athletes strengthen mindset, confidence, resilience, and competitive habits needed to succeed in demanding environments.
Role Overview
This independent contractor role is intended for a professional who understands elite sport settings and the psychology of motivated teenage athletes. The selected coach will work directly with 20 to 40 high-level high school pitchers and catchers, delivering personalized mental skills development and collaborating with the wider coaching staff.
VeloU treats mental performance as a trainable discipline, just like strength, power, and throwing development. The coach will be expected to build structured systems that help athletes improve confidence, concentration, emotional control, competitive identity, and resilience. The role also includes assessing athlete needs, applying individualized strategies, and monitoring progress over time so growth is meaningful and measurable.
Responsibilities
- Run monthly one-on-one mental performance sessions with each athlete in the Black Label group.
- Prepare written and video updates for athletes, parents, and coaching staff that summarize session priorities, developmental progress, and next-step recommendations.
- Complete a detailed individual athlete review every quarter that covers mental performance development, growth areas, and alignment with goals.
- Lead group mental performance meetings for the Black Label cohort on a quarterly basis.
- Share quarterly assessments and key findings with athletes, parents, and the coaching team.
Requirements
- A master’s degree in Sport Psychology, Performance Psychology, Counseling, or a closely related discipline.
- Proven experience working with adolescent or teenage athletes in high-performance settings.
- Strong understanding of mental skills training, including confidence development, focus, pressure management, resilience, and athletic identity.
- Clear, professional communication skills for working with athletes, parents, and coaches.
- 3 or more years of experience in elite adolescent, amateur, or collegiate sport environments is preferred.
- CMPC certification or a comparable credential is preferred.
- Familiarity with the demands, expectations, and culture of competitive baseball is preferred.
Compensation
Pay will be discussed during the interview and will depend on time commitment, availability, and the scope of the engagement. This is a 1099 independent contractor arrangement.
