Job description
Position Summary
This role is responsible for facilitating and coordinating administrative processes relating to mental health hearings within the Probate Court. The Mental Health Coordinator serves as a key liaison among applicants, law enforcement, legal representatives, and court personnel, ensuring all relevant procedures, documents, and communications are handled efficiently and in compliance with legal standards.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
- Screen and review emergency detention applications, ensuring forwarding to the correct law enforcement agencies.
- Evaluate petitions for mental health hearings, confirming statutory requirements and guidelines are satisfied.
- Manage and check petitions relating to the apprehension and return of patients under provisional outpatient status.
- Audit new adoption case files for accuracy, including reviewing home studies and adoption summaries.
- Draft orders for ongoing long-term commitments when hearings are not necessary, and prepare associated documentation.
- Generate written correspondence required for court proceedings, and process requests for release of identifying information by coordinating with confidential intermediaries as appropriate.
- Serve as court reporter during mental health hearings in the absence of the assigned reporter.
- Monitor the diary system daily for required periodic filings from healthcare facilities overseeing individuals under long-term commitment and request necessary reports from providers.
- Coordinate the logistics for transporting mental health patients between facilities as needed.
- Ensure attorneys have access to necessary Indiana State Department of Health forms and relevant medical history documentation.
- Perform additional tasks and responsibilities as assigned by the court.
Requirements & Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent is mandatory; additional post-secondary education is preferred.
- Experience in a role involving service or program coordination is required.
- Proven ability to handle confidential and sensitive material with discretion and professionalism.
- Excellent interpersonal skills for interacting effectively with diverse populations.
- Strong computer proficiency, particularly with Microsoft Office Suite.
- Prior experience in social services is preferred; familiarity with mental health or adoption processes is considered an advantage.
- Keen attention to detail, accuracy, and the ability to manage multiple responsibilities concurrently.
- Superior organizational and time management capabilities.

- Compensation will be determined based on relevant experience, with potential for additional pay based on educational background and bilingual abilities.
