Job description
Role Overview
This position involves one-on-one coaching to support young people in enhancing their wellbeing and mental health through multiple sessions. As a coach and mentor, you will guide individuals using various psychological and wellbeing techniques to foster positive mental health practices.
Coaching Techniques
- Handling panic attacks using the ABC method
- Practicing mindfulness through Mindfulness Pause exercises
- Acceptance strategies utilizing Riding the Wave technique
- Cognitive restructuring via Catch, Check, Change methods
- Progressive muscle relaxation and calming practices including Box Breathing and Grounding
- Supporting wellbeing in areas such as sleep, physical exercise, nutrition, social relationships, and identifying life purposes and goals
Delivery Methods
Coaching sessions may be conducted via live chat, video calls, or face-to-face meetings, depending on the young person’s preference.
Training and Support
Comprehensive initial training and ongoing assistance are provided by Youthline Wairau, in collaboration with Youthline Central South Island.
Candidate Requirements
- Strong listening and engagement capabilities with youth
- Professional demeanor in all interactions
- Ability to express warmth, empathy, unconditional positive regard, and maintain a non-judgmental stance
- Restraint from offering personal opinions or advice
- Relevant life experience
- Genuine care for New Zealand youth (Rangatahi)
Application and Processes
Applications are confidential and reviewed solely by the training and selection team. Candidates must agree to a minimum two-year commitment consisting of weekly coaching sessions and monthly supervision. Police background checks are mandatory. References are only provided after the commitment period is fulfilled.
Training Outline
- Approximately 3.5 hours of online counseling coursework per week spread over seven weeks
- Six evening videoconference practice sessions from 6:30 PM to 9:00 PM
Engagement Details
