Role Overview
California State University, Bakersfield’s Athletics Department, an NCAA Division I program, is hiring a part-time, temporary Men’s Soccer Assistant Coach for the 2026/2027 academic year, with availability starting in Summer 2026. This is a non-tenure-track appointment within the Coaching Assistant - 12 Month classification.
Position Purpose
The assistant coach will support the head coach in leading the men’s soccer program. The role includes helping with player development, team planning, recruiting, compliance, academic support, travel coordination, and the overall day-to-day operation of the program. The position also carries responsibility for upholding the integrity and reputation of both the athletics department and the university.
Core Duties
- Teach technical soccer skills and provide instruction that best supports individual athletes and the team.
- Help shape team and individual game plans through field coaching and video-based analysis.
- Create training and instructional plans for student-athletes and guide them on executing competition strategies.
- Travel to competitions and recruiting events, and assess prospective student-athletes.
- Maintain contact with recruits through email, phone calls, letters, and in-person conversations.
- Prepare required compliance and institutional paperwork.
- Recruit student-athletes who meet both academic and athletic standards.
- Work with academic support staff to monitor student-athletes’ academic progress.
- Coordinate with NCAA compliance staff to ensure adherence to all applicable rules and regulations.
- Assist in managing the annual budget with proper fiscal planning.
- Represent and promote the program to the media, donors, campus community, and the general public to strengthen visibility and revenue.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
The role calls for a strong grasp of NCAA compliance requirements, deep understanding of soccer skills and teaching methods, the ability to assess athletic talent, and experience supporting academic success for student-athletes. Strong computer literacy, travel planning ability, fundraising awareness, and excellent communication with athletes, families, coaches, counselors, and boosters are also important.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
- At least 2 years of coaching-related work experience.
- Proven ability to work effectively with student-athletes from varied backgrounds.
- Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to follow NCAA, conference, university, and athletics department rules.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior coaching or playing experience at the NCAA Division I level in soccer.
- Experience recruiting prospective student-athletes in a collegiate environment, ideally Division I.
- Solid working knowledge of NCAA Division I rules and regulations.
Compensation
The full-time equivalent monthly pay range for this classification is $6,288 to $7,658. Since this is a 0.50 FTE appointment, equivalent to 20 of 40 hours per week, the salary is prorated. The expected monthly pay range at 0.50 FTE is approximately $3,144 to $3,829. The anticipated hiring range is $3,144 to $3,829 per month, with final pay based on education and experience.
