Job description

About the employer

The Deutsche Diabetes-Zentrum (DDZ) in Düsseldorf is a Leibniz research center for diabetes research affiliated with Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf. As an interdisciplinary institution, it connects basic molecular and cell biology research with clinical, epidemiological, and care-related research approaches.

The center’s mission is to develop new ways to prevent, detect early, and diagnose diabetes mellitus, and to improve treatment and care for people living with diabetes and its complications.

The position is offered by the Institute of Clinical Diabetology, Biomedical Laboratory platform, with a planned start date of 01.10.2026.

Role overview

DDZ is looking for a Medical Laboratory Technician (MTLA) for the Biomedical Laboratory. The role can also be filled on a part-time basis. The work is scheduled from Monday to Friday only, with no weekend duties and no late or night shifts.

Key duties

  • Carry out laboratory testing and quality-control measurements in clinical chemistry, hematology, coagulation, and hormone analysis in line with RiliBäk requirements.
  • Record, document, and assess the test results.
  • Prepare sample aliquots and document specimens intended for the biobank.

Candidate profile

The ideal candidate has completed MTLA training and is familiar with the tasks listed above. Strong accuracy, a structured way of working, and reliable collaboration with physicians and study nurses are important. Independent, goal-oriented work and solid teamwork skills are also expected.

Good command of standard office software is desirable, and prior exposure to laboratory information systems or biobank software would be an advantage.

What the employer offers

You will join a committed team that values mutual support, short decision-making paths, and open communication. The position includes thorough onboarding, opportunities for further training, and a varied, interesting workplace.

Additional benefits include company pension provision, flexible working-time models, no weekend shifts, and no night shifts. The organization also promotes family-friendly working conditions and equal career opportunities. DDZ has been certified under the “Audit berufundfamilie” since May 2011.

Contract and working conditions

The employment relationship follows the TV-L collective agreement as applicable in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The appointment is initially limited to 6 months; however, an extension may be possible depending on the replacement situation. If the candidate is suitable and staffing conditions allow, longer-term cooperation may also be considered.

In case of equal suitability, women will be given preference. Severely disabled applicants will also be given preference when equally qualified.

The provisions of Section 7(1) of the Part-Time and Fixed-Term Employment Act are observed.
