Role overview

St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital is looking for a Medical Laboratory Assistant to support laboratory operations in a patient-focused hospital setting. This role sits within a collaborative, compassionate environment where quality care and teamwork are central to daily work.

What you will do

Reporting to the Manager of Laboratory Services, you will handle patient sample collection, specimen receipt, data entry, and the preparation of specimens for testing and transport. The position also includes quality control tasks, histology-related duties, wash-up work, and other assigned responsibilities, all while following safety procedures across the laboratory and the hospital.

Required qualifications

  • Completion of a recognized Medical Laboratory Assistant program from an accredited post-secondary institution.
  • Current certification with MLPAO or CSMLS, or active progress toward obtaining it.
  • Strong phlebotomy capability.
  • Working knowledge of venipuncture, specimen collection, laboratory processes, and data entry.
  • Ability to identify and resolve analytical and technical issues.
  • A patient- and team-centered approach with the ability to communicate in a courteous, flexible, and professional way with patients, families, staff, and volunteers.
  • Comfort using computers and workplace systems such as Outlook, RL6, internet/intranet tools including STEGHnet, and basic word processing software.
  • Ability to adapt to changing duties during a shift, follow direction, and maintain professionalism.
  • Openness to change and a proactive mindset toward departmental initiatives.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and take initiative.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal abilities, with the capacity to build trust and positively influence others.
  • Physical capability to carry out the duties of the role.
  • Ability to maintain regular attendance in line with the Attendance Support Program.
  • A performance record that aligns with STEGH values and code of conduct.

Preferred experience

  • At least 1 year of prior laboratory experience, ideally in a hospital setting.
  • Familiarity with Cerner LIS.

Working hours

The selected candidate must be able to work all shifts required by the department and remain flexible for occasional schedule changes based on operational needs.
