Mechanical Fitter

Role Overview

We are looking to expand our dedicated team with a skilled Mechanical Fitter experienced in the railway sector. This permanent, full-time position based in Bishopbriggs, Scotland, offers a chance to work on the maintenance and repair of rail vehicles, supporting safety, reliability, and optimum functioning of rail systems.

Key Duties

• Carry out mechanical assembly, maintenance, overhaul, and fitting tasks on rail vehicles and related machinery.
• Identify mechanical faults and perform corrective maintenance to reduce equipment downtime.
• Interpret engineering schematics, technical manuals, and maintenance instructions accurately.
• Conduct inspections and testing to ensure equipment operates within safety and performance standards.
• Replace and service mechanical parts such as braking mechanisms, bogies, couplings, suspension, and pneumatic devices.
• Maintain precise documentation and maintenance records.
• Follow company protocols, rail industry standards, and health and safety regulations consistently.
• Collaborate effectively with engineers, technicians, and operations personnel to meet maintenance goals.
• Engage in continuous improvement efforts and uphold a strong safety culture.

Candidate Profile

Required Qualifications and Skills:

• Certification as a Mechanical Fitter, Mechanical Technician, or equivalent qualification (e.g., NVQ Level 3, City & Guilds, Apprenticeship).
• Prior experience in mechanical fitting or maintenance roles.
• Competency in reading and understanding engineering drawings.
• Proficient fault diagnosis and problem-solving abilities.
• Sound knowledge of health and safety regulations.
• Capability to work independently and collaboratively within teams.
• Hold a valid UK Driving Licence (location dependent, but preferred).
• Willingness to travel as required, with company transport provided.
• Preparedness to work outdoors under all weather conditions with provided PPE.

Desirable Attributes:

• Experience in rail, heavy engineering, automotive, aerospace, or manufacturing industries.
• Familiarity with railway maintenance procedures and standards.
• Prior exposure to railway work environments is advantageous.
• Experience with hydraulic, pneumatic, braking, and rotating mechanical systems.
• Certification in Personal Track Safety (PTS) is a plus.
