Job description

Role Overview

We are seeking a Mechanical Estimator for our municipal sector projects based at our Head Office in Loughrea, Co. Galway. This role involves creating precise and comprehensive cost estimates for mechanical engineering works, ensuring adherence to company policies and industry standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare detailed mechanical estimates based on drawings and specifications, incorporating realistic risk levels.
  • Participate actively in design development to assess constructability, material choices, innovative methods, and budget efficiency.
  • Provide pricing insights during tender stages to support option evaluation and budget setting with cost-efficiency focus.
  • Follow and document risk management and governance protocols with proper authorization throughout processes.
  • Contribute to creating tender preparation schedules and collaborate across teams to develop staffing plans using insights from successful projects.
  • Coordinate with procurement teams to develop vendor and subcontractor plans, negotiate terms, and solicit competitive quotations, especially for materials and subcontracted work.
  • Stay current with mechanical engineering technical advancements and incorporate these into estimation practices to increase accuracy and competitiveness.
  • Develop financial models for framework bids, including setting staff rates aligned to project budgets.
  • Apply standardized cost coding systems to ensure consistent cost tracking and enable precise feedback and future cost capturing.

Required Skills and Experience

  • At least 5 years of mechanical estimating experience, ideally within water, wastewater, or construction sectors.
  • Demonstrated ability to produce detailed and accurate estimates.
  • Strong numerical and analytical aptitude with high attention to detail.
  • Sound understanding of mechanical engineering fundamentals and construction techniques.
  • Expertise in cost estimating software and proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills to collaborate effectively across departments.
  • Capability to manage several projects simultaneously and deliver within tight deadlines.
