Job description

Overview

We are an early-stage aerospace startup dedicated to pioneering next-generation spacecraft propulsion technologies for orbital missions. We are expanding our engineering team and seek a Mechanical Design Engineer to lead the mechanical design, development, and qualification of critical propulsion hardware. This role involves full ownership from conceptual design through flight-ready hardware, demanding hands-on engineering with multidisciplinary collaboration across propulsion, systems, and testing teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead design of electric propulsion components and spacecraft subsystems mechanically.
  • Create precision mechanical parts such as propulsion assemblies, fluid control hardware, and structural frameworks.
  • Manage the hardware lifecycle from initial concept, detailed CAD modeling, prototyping, qualification, to flight readiness.
  • Produce 3D CAD models, manufacturing blueprints, and GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing) documentation.
  • Conduct structural and thermal performance validations using finite element analysis.
  • Select materials and manufacturing techniques suitable for demanding aerospace environments.
  • Assemble and test hardware in the lab, overseeing environmental verification including vibration, shock, and thermal vacuum tests.
  • Analyze test outcomes, drive design refinements, and iterate hardware through multiple development phases.
  • Collaborate closely with propulsion, systems, manufacturing, and test engineering teams to ensure delivery of reliable propulsion systems.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or related fields.
  • Minimum of 3 years designing complex mechanical hardware.
  • Advanced skills in CAD software and finite element analysis tools.
  • Experience with structural and thermal analyses.
  • Proficient in generating manufacturing drawings and implementing GD&T standards.
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical design principles, materials science, and fluid system mechanics.
  • Track record designing and testing mechanical assemblies and pressurized components.
  • Problem-solving aptitude using fundamental engineering principles.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-moving, collaborative engineering environment with significant ownership.

Preferred Experience

  • Background in aerospace or spacecraft hardware development.
  • Experience specifically with electric propulsion or high-performance propulsion systems hardware design.
  • Hands-on skills in building, assembling, and testing precision mechanical systems.
  • Familiarity with environmental qualification tests including vibration, shock, and thermal vacuum.
  • Involvement in hardware development from prototype through production stages.
  • Exposure to startup or early-stage product development cultures.

Benefits and Compensation

  • Competitive base salary ranging from $130,000 to $180,000 depending on experience and skills.
  • Equity via stock options offering ownership participation.
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance coverage.
  • 401(k) retirement savings plan.
  • Paid time off for work-life balance.
  • Opportunity to own and influence flight hardware development through launch.
  • Direct collaboration with seasoned aerospace engineers promoting significant career growth.
