Role Summary

The Sorter at the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) safely and productively operates assigned workstations to meet operational goals. Sorting duties involve managing materials on a conveyor belt to meet set quality and output expectations. Additional tasks may include cleaning screens and conveyors, which could involve working at heights or tight spaces using hand tools. Maintaining cleanliness in the work area and assisting with housekeeping duties are also expected. The position requires training and supporting team members and involves working 8-hour shifts on days or evenings.

Work Environment and Schedule

The role functions in a COR-certified facility, complying with regulatory standards and the Client's Environmental Management System. Operational hours can reach up to 17 hours daily, seven days a week.

  • Perform routine equipment maintenance checks.
  • Keep assigned areas clean according to instructions.
  • Complete training plans and achieve competencies within set timeframes; pursue additional training as approved.
  • Clean screens and conveyors, including work at heights or confined spaces as needed.
  • Identify and propose workflow improvements to supervisors.
  • Contribute to strategies enhancing productivity, reducing downtime and costs, and adding value to the MRF.
  • Train and mentor team members when designated.
  • Support initiatives to foster a positive and healthy workplace culture.
  • Carry out additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Prior sorting or automated production experience is preferred but not mandatory.
  • Capability to sort products on a moving conveyor line while meeting quality and production targets.
  • Strong attention to detail for safety and quality compliance.
  • Proficient English verbal communication skills to understand and follow instructions.
  • Good interpersonal skills for teamwork.
  • Availability to work 8-hour day or evening shifts within operating hours up to 17 hours per day, 7 days a week; must have personal transportation.
  • Ability to use a respirator when required in dusty environments.
  • Commitment to maintaining confidentiality according to company policies and regulations.
  • Ability to satisfy all employment conditions including drug and alcohol testing, medical exams, and immunizations.

Working Hours and Schedule

  • 8-hour shifts: Day shift from 6:00 am to 2:30 pm, Evening shift from 3:00 pm to 11:30 pm.
  • 30-minute unpaid lunch break.
  • Two paid 15-minute rest breaks, morning and afternoon.
  • Base workweek: 40 hours / 2,080 hours annually.
  • Scheduled workdays are Monday to Friday, with overtime availability primarily on Saturdays.

Work Conditions

  • Work occurs in a recycling facility involving stair climbing, working at heights, confined spaces, and exposure to industrial hazards like noise, fumes, chemicals, gases, and pathogens; appropriate personal protective equipment is provided.
  • Exposure to moving machinery, electrical hazards, and varying temperatures.
  • Physical demands include lifting and carrying up to 49 pounds multiple times per shift.
