About the Institute

The Institute for Bioprocessing and Analytical Measurement Techniques e.V. (iba) is a non-university research institution affiliated with the Free State of Thuringia and serves as an associate institute of TU Ilmenau. Within the research profile "Biotechniques at Interfaces," the institute pursues application-focused research aimed at developing technical systems for life sciences. The core research concentrates on engineering molecular and cellular processes for disease modeling and personalized therapy strategies. The examination, modification, and application of interfaces and interfacial effects target optimizing high-throughput methods along with other procedures, systems, and products relevant to medicine, biotechnology, and related fields.

Position Overview

As part of a strategic effort to enhance the institute's scientific excellence, the 3D-SkinTech research group seeks a highly motivated candidate for a Master's thesis project focused on the biofabrication of a physiological dermal equivalent. This group develops various skin models employing both hydrogel- and scaffold-based methods. The task involves printing a scaffold with melt electrowriting technology that replicates the topography of the dermal-epidermal junction to produce a more physiologically accurate model.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop a melt electrowriting protocol for generating dermal scaffolds.
  • Integrate physiologically relevant dermal topographies into the scaffolds.
  • Analyze fiber structure and morphology of printed scaffolds using tools such as scanning electron microscopy.
  • Assess the mechanical properties of the scaffolds.
  • Independently culture primary cell lines after proper training.
  • Characterize the cellularized dermal equivalents through immunohistology and fluorescence and/or confocal microscopy techniques.

Required Qualifications

  • Completed Bachelor's degree and current enrollment in a Master's program in Biotech, Biomedicine, or a related field.
  • Preferable experience in biofabrication methods and 3D printing.
  • Desirable knowledge of cell culture and 3D cell culture techniques.
  • Strong motivation for scientific literature review.
  • High degree of self-motivation, responsibility, and teamwork skills.
  • Proficiency with scientific software and Microsoft Office applications (Excel, PowerPoint, Word).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication abilities in both German and English.
