Position Overview

This role is responsible for planning, supervising, and actively participating in a small team focused on the specialized restoration of municipal stormwater infrastructure. Key tasks include overseeing the reconstruction of catch basins, drainage manholes, and related lateral systems, ensuring all work aligns with detailed plans and standards. The role operates with substantial autonomy within accepted trade practices adjusted for municipal requirements, under the supervision of a higher-grade manager who conducts inspections ensuring compliance with departmental guidelines. The foreman directs a small crew of workers.

Core Responsibilities

  • Lead and directly engage with a small crew tasked with maintaining, building, and repairing the City's stormwater systems.
  • Interpret and apply work instructions, which may be verbal or written and accompanied by technical drawings or sketches.
  • Perform rebuilding and adjustment of masonry and castings on existing structures to meet relevant Massachusetts Department of Transportation regulations.
  • Inspect completed projects to ensure adherence to plans and specifications.
  • Coordinate daily work assignments and allocate crew members accordingly.
  • Manage supply orders and parts procurement as required.
  • Carry out ancillary tasks as needed to support operations.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Extensive familiarity with standard trade practices, materials, tools, and equipment relevant to stormwater infrastructure.
  • Strong understanding of safety hazards and appropriate precautions connected to construction and maintenance of stormwater and roadway environments.
  • Expertise in standard methods for building, finishing, and inspecting catch basins, drainage manholes, and stormwater laterals.
  • Capability to work accurately following established lines and grades indicated on plans or directed by an engineer.
  • Proficient in identifying, diagnosing, and repairing equipment issues.
  • Competence in supervising a small workforce effectively.
  • Ability to comprehend and follow both written and oral instructions efficiently.
  • Skillful in the operation, maintenance, and care of trade-specific tools, equipment, and materials.

Educational Background and Experience

  • Possession of a high school diploma or recognized equivalent, ideally supplemented by technical coursework relevant to the trade.
  • At least five years' experience working as a skilled maintenance technician.
  • Prior work experience involving stormwater infrastructure repairs is desirable.
  • Requirement to obtain Workzone Safety Certification within six months of employment if not already held.
