Job description

About the Role

The Canada Revenue Agency is hiring for a Mail and General Services Technician position within a workplace that emphasizes inclusion, accessibility, and representation of the diverse communities it serves. Hiring may consider employment equity and diversity inclusion measures, and applicants who wish to be evaluated under those criteria are expected to complete the relevant staffing questionnaire and provide consent for their information to be used during screening or selection.

This opportunity is being staffed for temporary roles only at this time, although permanent staffing could be possible later if circumstances change while the pool remains active. Work is on-site, and the exact presence requirements depend on the position, location, and operational needs. Candidates should also be aware that accommodation may be available where needed.

Role Summary

The position supports mail handling, materiel movement, storage, distribution, waste pickup, vehicle operation, and general service activities. It also involves recordkeeping, statistics, and client support related to mail and materiel services.

Key Duties

  • Handle incoming and outgoing mail and materiel by receiving, sorting, checking, inventorying, storing, issuing, distributing, shipping, and disposing of items as required.
  • Process mail flows, including counting and recording remittances.
  • Track mail activity and enter mail and materiel information into approved data collection systems.
  • Report any damage, shortages, or deterioration in materiel.
  • Collect classified waste from clients and prepare it for destruction.
  • Take apart, move, and reinstall office enclosures, and support basic maintenance, moving, and storage tasks.
  • Use material-handling equipment such as motorized and non-motorized forklifts, and operate light and heavy vehicles.
  • Assist clients by providing information and direction related to mail and materiel services.

Locations and Hiring Scope

This staffing process is intended to fill roles in British Columbia, Alberta, and Saskatchewan. In British Columbia, positions may be located in the Lower Mainland (Surrey/Vancouver), Victoria, Penticton, Kelowna, and Prince George. In Alberta, roles may be in Edmonton, Calgary, Lethbridge, and Red Deer. In Saskatchewan, roles may be in Regina and Saskatoon.

Who May Apply

Applications are open to any person living in Canada, as well as Canadian citizens and permanent residents living abroad. Hiring preference will first go to veterans, then to Canadian citizens and permanent residents, and also to eligible veterans and Canadian Armed Forces members, along with individuals who have preferred status and live or work within 40 km of the staffed location.

Education

Applicants must have completed at least two years of secondary school, or meet a CRA-approved alternative. Acceptable alternatives include a suitable mix of education, training, and/or experience.

Experience

No prior experience is required for this role.

Assessment and Selection

Selection may include a performance validation if needed, and English is the essential language requirement. Candidates must also meet suitability standards. Former CRA employees whose most recent employment ended because of rejection on probation, termination for incompetence, or termination for misconduct may undergo a case-by-case review to determine whether that history affects suitability.

The staffing process includes the Korn Ferry Unsupervised Internet Test (UIT), with assessments scheduled for July 2026. Candidates are expected to be available when scheduled, and rescheduling will only be considered in exceptional cases. The board may use a top-down approach based on UIT results to reduce the number of candidates moving forward.

Additional merit factors may also be evaluated during the process and could be used to identify candidates for appointment, including qualifications, knowledge, specific experience, extra education or training, budget considerations, appointment duration, start date, the need to reduce business disruption, and employment equity.

Employment Conditions

This position requires reliability status clearance. Employees must work on-site five days per week within British Columbia, Alberta, or Saskatchewan. The role may also involve overtime, travel, evening or weekend work, shift work, flexible scheduling, and work on statutory holidays. Training must be completed as required.

Other Requirements That May Apply

Some positions may require a valid Class 5 driver’s license with a clean driving record, or personal mobility equivalent to holding a driver’s license. Certain assignments may require driving light or heavy trucks on public roads for up to three hours. Physical demands may include regularly lifting more than 10 kg, climbing, bending, lifting, carrying heavy cartons, mailbags, pallets, and furniture over 10 kilograms, and pushing heavy carts daily for up to five hours.

Important Notes

Applicants from the general public are responsible for their own expenses related to participating in the staffing process. Qualified current or former members of the Canadian Armed Forces who receive an offer are not entitled to relocation costs from the CRA, though they may be eligible for final relocation assistance from the Department of National Defence.

The closing date may change, so candidates are encouraged to apply promptly. The resulting pool may be used to staff similar positions. CRA employees are expected to uphold the organization’s code of integrity and professional conduct, as well as its conflict of interest, gifts and hospitality, and post-employment directives.
