Limited Duration Tax Paralegal - Low Income Taxpayer Clinic (LITC)

Position Overview

Legal Aid Services of Oregon (LASO) is hiring a full-time Tax Paralegal Navigator to join its Low Income Taxpayer Clinic (LITC), a statewide initiative providing legal support to low-income Oregonians with federal tax disputes and related state tax concerns. This role combines in-person engagement with opportunities for partial remote work within Oregon and is funded by a 24-month grant from the Oregon State Bar Legal Services Program, with potential for extension based on future funding.

About LASO and the LITC Program

LASO is a nonprofit dedicated to representing low-income individuals in civil legal matters across Oregon, emphasizing advocacy that creates broad community impact. It operates eight regional offices and specialized statewide programs focusing on farmworkers, Native Americans, and low-income taxpayers, serving a diverse population exceeding 220,000 people. Equity and cultural responsiveness are central to LASO's mission, workplace, and client interactions.

Key Responsibilities

• Collaborate with the Outreach Team to develop and expand Facilitated Self-Assistance clinics statewide and represent the program at community events.
• Assist in broadening access to tax aid and education for under-resourced regions.
• Identify and advocate on issues affecting the client community.
• Provide administrative assistance to the Program Director, including invoice processing, grant report preparation, and client support.
• Conduct trauma-informed intake interviews.
• Perform additional duties as assigned by the LITC Program Director.

Required Qualifications

• Between 1 to 5 years of experience in tax or similar regulatory program navigation or case management.
• Effective English communication skills including public speaking.
• High attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to produce quality work efficiently.
• Commitment to advocating for the legal rights of low-income populations.
• Self-motivated, creative, good judgment, and ready to collaborate and learn independently.
• Professional courtesy toward team members and flexible approach to evolving program needs.
• Strong dedication to anti-bias principles, cultural competency, and addressing systemic racism and oppression.

Ideal candidates are solution-focused, receptive to feedback, adept at both independent and team work, and willing to share workloads equitably to prevent burnout. Administrative duties require team cooperation.

Preference is given to candidates bilingual in Spanish or other languages commonly spoken by the client base. Language proficiency should be detailed in applications. Prior experience with tax navigation or self-assistance programs is a plus.

Salary and Benefits

The position offers a 35-hour work week with a salary ranging based on experience:
- $46,200 to $52,200 annually for 0-5 years experience
- $53,400 to $58,200 annually for 6-10 years experience
- $59,400 to $70,200 annually for 11-20 years experience
Additional annual pay between $4,300 and $5,700 is available for bilingual proficiency levels. Benefits include comprehensive health insurance (individual and family), vision, dental, 6% employer retirement contributions, paid holidays, vacation, sick leave, and relocation expense coverage.

Working Conditions and Requirements

• Work hours are Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM, with occasional after-hours or weekend duties as needed.
• Office-based tasks including shared workspace use, meetings both virtual and in-person.
• Travel within Oregon will be required, necessitating a valid driver's license or ability to obtain one within 60 days of hire.
• Extended computer use and desk work with the capability of lifting up to 20 lbs.
