About the Role
The Debug team at Google is a multidisciplinary group focused on innovative approaches to mitigate mosquito-borne diseases through deployment of Wolbachia-infected mosquitoes worldwide. Established over ten years ago, the team integrates mosquito biologists, data scientists, engineers, build technicians, and operations experts.
Responsibilities
- Conduct behavioral and physiological bioassays to evaluate the quality and competitiveness of Wolbachia mosquitoes produced at scale.
- Characterize the biology and performance of mass-reared mosquitoes using laboratory insectary assessments and field studies.
- Work hand-in-hand with multidisciplinary teams to identify and resolve quality issues related to mosquitoes.
- Evaluate novel rearing techniques and equipment, measuring their impact on production and quality metrics.
Qualifications and Skills
- Possess a bachelor's degree in Entomology, Biological Sciences, or a related discipline, or have equivalent hands-on experience.
- Hold at least two years' experience in insect biology, with a preference for those with mass insect rearing expertise.
- Familiarity with pest control product application and basic molecular biology methods such as DNA extraction.
- Capability in data analysis utilizing tools such as Google Sheets, R, Python, or similar platforms to assist in daily operations and reporting.
- Adept at working in dynamic, fast-paced environments with flexibility to adjust working hours to meet project demands.
