Position Overview
The Missouri Capitol Police seeks a committed law enforcement Lieutenant to lead with integrity, uphold a robust work ethic, and strive to fulfill the department's mission. This agency serves a specialized community including state employees, elected officials, and the general public within the 72-acre Capitol Complex and adjacent state office buildings in Cole County, safeguarding over 18,000 employees and numerous visitors annually.
Mission and Service
The mission prioritizes delivering superior service ensuring safety and security, grounded upon professionalism, fairness, personal honor, and integrity. The Lieutenant assists sworn officers in executing comprehensive police functions to maintain public safety and facility security by enforcing state statutes for a constituency comprising state officials and employees.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead as Commander of the Patrol Division and the Executive Protection Detail at the Governor’s Mansion.
- Report directly to the Capitol Police Captain and oversee personnel management, operational directives, and the administration of assigned divisions.
- Oversee law enforcement activities protecting the public, government personnel, the Governor, and their family.
- Provide guidance, coaching, and mentorship to department officers, manage staffing, coordinate planning, and allocate operational resources effectively.
- Coordinate responses during emergencies, critical incidents, special events, and protection duties within the Capitol jurisdiction.
- Conduct or supervise criminal and administrative investigations independently or with partner agencies.
- Review supervisory performance, enforce compliance with departmental policies, recommend recruitment and promotions, and manage disciplinary actions as necessary.
Minimum Requirements
- Must currently hold a Missouri Class A or B Peace Officer license from the Missouri Department of Public Safety.
- Maintain certification through Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST).
- Possess a minimum of five years' supervisory experience in law enforcement.
- Hold a valid Missouri driver’s license.

Additional Job Requirements
- Completion of application, resume, and cover letter as part of the hiring process.
- Participation in a standardized written test and oral interview provided by the Missouri Police Chief’s Association.
- Successful completion of an extensive background check by Missouri Capitol Police before appointment.
- Passing a medical and vision exam (corrected to 20/40), drug screening, and psychological evaluation after a conditional job offer.
- Physical capability to stand or sit for prolonged durations and occasionally lift, push, pull or carry up to 180 pounds.
- No offensive tattoos visible while in uniform or official duties, unless approved by the Chief of Police.
- Successful completion of a six-month field training and probationary period.
