Position Overview
The South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) invites candidates interested in a fast-paced, customer-focused role to apply for the License Examiner II position located at the Beaufort Branch Office in Beaufort, SC. This role offers an opportunity to contribute to public service and be part of a collaborative environment emphasizing teamwork and exceptional customer care.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct road test examinations across various vehicle classes including Class A, B, C, D, E, F, M, and Commercial Driver’s Licenses (CDLs) where applicable.
- Assess applicants’ physical and mental capabilities to safely operate motor vehicles through written, oral, and automated knowledge and driving tests.
- Perform pre-trip inspections on vehicles to ensure safe operating conditions before tests.
- Process all necessary documentation related to driver licensing, beginner permits, identification cards, vehicle registrations, license plates, permits, and titles including special requests for repossessed or salvaged vehicles.
- Perform data entry for customer name and address information, research suspensions, modify driver records, and issue automobile dealership licenses.
- Respond to customer inquiries regarding driver, vehicle, registration, titling, and insurance matters both in person and by phone.
- Manage fee collections, including donations for the Donate Life Fund, prepare daily reconciliations and refund requests, compute vehicle sales taxes, and adjust vehicle records.
- Handle surrendered license plates by issuing receipts, organizing plates for pickup, and completing related paperwork.
- Maintain office equipment and perform routine maintenance tasks.
- Complete administrative errands such as faxing, mailing documents, trips to the post office, and bank deposits.
Working Environment
Road testing is conducted year-round under varying weather conditions, including rain, wind, heat, and cold. Testing operations begin early morning and extend into early evening hours. The role involves both office-based work in a climate-controlled setting and fieldwork outdoors, requiring physical activities such as standing, walking, and ongoing communication.
Minimum Qualifications and Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid South Carolina driver’s license, minimum age of 21 years, and at least one year of driving experience.
- Successful completion of a nationwide criminal background check including fingerprinting.
- Certification through a formal CDL test examiner trainer course is required before administering CDL knowledge and skill tests.
- Strong communication skills to interact professionally with customers and coworkers.
- Comprehensive knowledge of driver licensing regulations and DMV competencies.
- The ability to relocate within 30 miles of the assigned office if necessary due to business needs.
Additional Details
- The License Examiner II reports to the Branch Manager or Assistant Branch Manager.
- Exposure to various outdoor conditions and processing chemicals used in driver’s license development may occur.
- The position is classified at a Tier Two office location.

Compensation and Benefits
