Overview

Reporting to the Event Operations Manager, the Museum Curator is entrusted with the comprehensive planning, development, installation, interpretation, and stewardship of exhibits and collections at the Edward-Dean Museum & Gardens. The role emphasizes crafting informative and immersive museum experiences through exhibit design, artifact preservation, and engaging public programming.

Key Duties

  • Manage acquisition, cataloging, conservation, interpretation, and presentation of artifacts aligned with the museum’s objectives.
  • Conduct detailed research for exhibitions and publications while collaborating on fundraising and grant activities.
  • Engage with staff, volunteers, and the community to promote museum outreach and educational initiatives.
  • Oversee operational tasks, including artifact classification, conservation adherence, display setup, and artifact loans.
  • Implement visitor engagement strategies such as guided tours, workshops, lectures, and interactive exhibits ensuring positive experiences.
  • Participate in grant proposal preparation, assist in accreditation maintenance, and support volunteer recruitment and training.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in museum studies, art, history, archaeology, or a closely related field from an accredited institution.
  • Preferred: minimum one year of experience in curatorial roles within educational or museum settings; a relevant Master’s degree may substitute the experience requirement.
  • Expertise in artifact selection, preservation, restoration standards, and professional ethical practices.
  • Competence in independent research, exhibit development, and public presentation.
  • Valid California Driver’s License required.

Physical Requirements

  • Mobility within the facility and ability to lift objects up to 25 pounds, occasionally up to 35 pounds.
  • Capability to remain seated for extended durations focusing on detailed tasks involving computer use and paperwork.
