Job description

Role overview

CGS Federal (Contact Government Services) is hiring an entry-level Legal Assistant to support United States Attorneys with both litigation-related and administrative tasks. In this position, you will work under the supervision of a Supervisory Paralegal or Project Supervisor and contribute to a team focused on government innovation through technology, collaboration, and high-quality service.

What you will do

  • Review incoming materials and decide what legal documents need to be assembled or prepared, including charging instruments, motions, orders, pleadings, deposition notices, trial subpoenas, and grand jury subpoenas.
  • Edit and proofread drafts such as motions, orders, correspondence, discovery requests and responses, and other pleadings, making sure recurring documents follow the correct style and formatting rules.
  • Submit filings electronically to the proper state or federal court as directed by attorneys, while following local court procedures and rules.
  • Support trial preparation by building trial notebooks and compiling witness and exhibit lists independently.
  • Prepare, monitor, and process grand jury subpoenas and returns; organize legal data, copy and arrange documents, and assemble records for court filings.
  • Draft original correspondence that requires knowledge of legal procedures and terminology, such as transmittal letters, extension requests, updates on referred matters, and notices to defense counsel.
  • Carry out docketing tasks, including opening, updating, and closing cases in the automated case tracking system and retrieving information from databases when needed.
  • Authorize litigation-related funds as needed and track whether those expenses remain necessary.
  • Check bills and invoices and forward them to the budget office for payment processing.
  • Manage calendars for active cases and attorneys, track hearings, trials, meetings, interviews, deadlines, and court appearances, and maintain a suspense system for upcoming dates.
  • Set up new case files in both paper and electronic form, including chronological filing, conflict-of-interest sheets, numbering initial materials, and discovery organization.
  • Prepare closing files by organizing documents, confirming all required items are included, and preparing closing sheets for attorney signature.
  • Welcome visitors, answer calls, route inquiries, carry papers to and from the federal courthouse, and provide information about office procedures and pending or closed matters.
  • Attend meetings and training sessions as required.
  • Create documents and presentations using office software such as Word, Excel, Outlook, Access, and Adobe Acrobat Professional, including tables, charts, graphs, and integrated materials for legal documents or courtroom use.
  • Provide litigation technology support when needed, including transcription, scanning, plotter use, chart/photo enlargement, video or tape duplication, and exhibit preparation.
  • Take on other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • At least one year of specialized litigation experience is required; more than three years is preferred.
  • Relevant experience should include reviewing legal documents for completeness, gathering and organizing information for hearings or trials, researching legal sources, maintaining filing systems, and using automated tools to produce legal documents and correspondence.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential.
  • Comfort using common office and legal software, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and Adobe Acrobat, is expected.
  • Ability to perform accurately and consistently under significant pressure is important.
  • Must be able to obtain a Public Trust security clearance.

Benefits

  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage.
  • Life insurance.
  • 401(k) retirement plan.
  • Flexible spending accounts for health care, dependent care, and commuting costs.
  • Paid time off plus observed state and federal holidays.
