Job description
Role overview
This position supports the Indiana Department of Correction in carrying out its statutory duties related to sex and violent offender registration. The role focuses on gathering legal records, reviewing and interpreting case materials, maintaining registration data, and preparing determinations that are shared with local law enforcement.
Key responsibilities
- Obtain court filings and registration records from local, state, and federal agencies.
- Examine legal materials such as criminal statutes, court orders, and related documents.
- Maintain and refresh internal, state, federal, and registry tracking systems.
- Prepare and finalize reviews so registration decisions can be issued.
- Coordinate with division staff and law enforcement partners to keep records current.
Preferred background and qualifications
- Academic or practical exposure to law or legal studies.
- Experience using legal research tools such as Westlaw, INcite, or Doxpop.
- Familiarity with criminal history materials such as Triple Is, probable cause affidavits, conviction and sentencing records, presentence investigation reports, and court orders, along with knowledge of where such records are stored.
- Ability to read, understand, and apply criminal and administrative codes, policies, legal documents, and procedure manuals.
- Comfort handling sensitive and confidential information with discretion.
- Strong written, spoken, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to build cooperative working relationships.
- Good organization, time management, and multitasking skills, especially under deadlines.
- Experience with Microsoft Office tools.
Work complexity and accountability
The role requires managing several detailed assignments at once and making sound judgments based on the facts of each case. Work may involve using multiple approaches to reach the correct outcome and must be completed accurately and on time. Errors may lead to public concerns, legal exposure, and safety risks for communities.
Decision-making and review
The incumbent works independently when determining offender registration obligations, and those decisions are forwarded to local law enforcement. Incorrect or incomplete determinations can create litigation risk and liability for the state or local agencies. When a matter needs escalation, the employee uses personal judgment to seek consultation and additional discussion. Final work is checked for alignment with Indiana Code, case law, agency policy, and department objectives.
