Overview

This position is a clinical operations informatics role supporting workflow improvement, clinical data analysis, and validation activities that shape practice and decision-making within Health Services. The work is highly focused on clinical operations, end-user experience, and collaboration with the Health Services EHR team as well as the technical teams handling EHR setup and development.

The assignment is with VA DOC in Richmond, Virginia, and is based onsite at 6900 Atmore Road, Richmond, VA 23225.

Core Responsibilities

  • Document existing clinical workflows, identify process gaps, support staff-facing enhancements, and help standardize practices across state facilities.
  • Create and maintain an inventory of Health Services clinical workflows within the EHR, along with prioritized recommendations for improvement.
  • Extract data from the EHR to answer clinical and operational questions, then validate findings against dependable reference sources.
  • Build reports and visual dashboards that support practice improvement and leadership decisions with evidence-based insights.
  • Establish repeatable clinical data extraction and reporting practices, including completion of reports that address active Health Services questions.
  • Review and validate EHR updates from the user’s perspective.
  • Perform ongoing testing of the core system, including support for MAR and related project components.
  • Help reduce validation gaps tied to EHR changes through structured testing and documentation.
  • Serve as a clinical contact for EHR-related questions and requests, with a strong emphasis on responsiveness.
  • Ensure smooth handoff of documentation and established processes so the work can continue consistently over time.

Required Skills and Background

  • Strong ability to turn unstructured medical text into structured data and map data elements to standard vocabularies for interoperability, decision support, coding, and analytics.
  • Solid knowledge of medical terminology from both clinical and informatics viewpoints.
  • Extensive experience retrieving data from electronic health record systems.
  • Proven ability to translate clinical questions into data analysis using EHR data.
  • Experience validating EHR data against outside reference sources.
  • Experience checking EHR data by comparing it with other data inside the EHR.
  • Experience documenting clinical workflows from patient care practice into EHR data entry and data management.
  • Experience applying national EHR standards to an EHR product.
  • Experience standardizing processes during an EHR implementation.
  • Experience analyzing and documenting clinical workflows in a multidisciplinary care setting.
  • Ability to explain clinical and data findings clearly to non-technical audiences, including medical staff and leadership.
  • Experience working with multiple stakeholders in a multidisciplinary clinical environment.

Additional Considerations

  • A clinical background such as nursing, medicine, pharmacy, or a similar field is preferred.
  • Experience in correctional or institutional healthcare is preferred; similar constrained, multidisciplinary care settings may also be considered.
  • Previous experience using EHR systems in a clinical capacity is required.

Work Setting

This is an onsite role in Richmond, Virginia. The position requires close coordination with clinical staff, leadership, and technical teams supporting the EHR environment.

Assignment Term

The expected duration of the engagement is 12+ months.
