Job description

Overview

This role involves delivering mentorship and facilitating hands-on engineering projects within a dynamic makerspace environment. The position focuses on guiding students, staff, and startups through technical prototyping, while promoting critical thinking and creativity through an inquiry-driven approach to learning.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide technical mentorship and guidance across engineering projects, emphasizing prototyping and design processes.
  • Plan and conduct practical workshops covering mechanical engineering, electronics, CAD, robotics, and related disciplines.
  • Support interdisciplinary projects that blend engineering with creative fields such as art, design, and coding.
  • Maintain and manage makerspace resources including 3D printers, laser cutters, woodworking tools, soldering stations ensuring safety and proper use.
  • Perform routine calibration, maintenance, and minor repairs of engineering equipment.
  • Oversee inventory of materials and recommend procurement actions as needed.
  • Collaborate with faculty to integrate engineering projects within existing academic courses and contribute to curriculum development focused on design thinking and iterative learning.
  • Engage in technological research, innovation initiatives, industry collaborations, and may lead teams or projects supporting these areas.
  • Support outreach efforts aimed at promoting STEM education and makerspace engagement within the broader community.

Qualifications and Experience

  • A degree in mechanical, electronics, mechatronics engineering, or a closely related field.
  • At least five years of relevant professional experience.
  • Proficiency with engineering fabrication tools and software, including CAD platforms, microcontroller programming, and various manufacturing techniques.
  • Familiarity with project-based or inquiry-driven teaching methods.
  • Comfortable programming with platforms like Arduino, Raspberry Pi, and Python.
  • Experience as a professional engineer or in a related technical role, with additional coding skills considered advantageous.
  • Experience working in makerspaces, innovation labs, or educational environments is preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to engage effectively with learners of diverse backgrounds.
  • Commitment to maintaining safety standards within the makerspace.
