Position Overview

The Kansas State Board of Indigents’ Defense Services is currently seeking applications for the role of Lead Assistant Public Defender (PD III) based in the Sedgwick County Public Defender Office, Wichita, Kansas. This position suits attorneys preferably possessing at least five years of relevant experience. Individuals at this level are trusted to independently manage cases of all severity levels, including the most intricate legal matters, while receiving supervision.

BIDS, through regional public defender offices such as Sedgwick County’s, offers representation to adults charged with felonies who cannot afford private attorneys. The organization is enhancing its public defense framework by promoting an interdisciplinary, collaborative model that leverages community resources to address client needs beyond their case specifics.

The Sedgwick County Public Defender Office is dedicated to recruiting dynamic, dedicated advocates passionate about public defense and interested in transforming the office into a leading example of collaborative, client-centered defense practice.

Key Responsibilities

  • Possess advanced litigation capabilities including comprehensive motions practice.
  • Manage cases across all severity levels and handle complex statutory, procedural, and constitutional issues.
  • Take on informal leadership tasks, assisting office management and supporting the professional growth of less experienced attorneys and staff.
  • Contribute additional support to administrative and agency-wide initiatives as directed by the Chief Public Defender.
  • Uphold the highest standards of professionalism and foster a positive and supportive workplace environment.

Qualifications and Competencies

  • Graduate of an ABA-accredited law school with an active, good-standing license to practice in Kansas at hiring.
  • Minimum of five years’ experience in criminal defense or comparable legal area preferred.
  • Excellent written and oral communication abilities.
  • Proficiency in electronic systems including computers, e-filing platforms, and case management software.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills ensuring effective case preparation and timely handling.
  • Ability to manage complex litigation, emergencies, and crisis situations effectively.
  • Ability to maintain professional and respectful interactions with clients, colleagues, and others.
  • Intellectual curiosity in criminal law and procedure.
  • Dedication to client-centered practice, confidentiality, and strict personal and professional ethics.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally to various court and jail locations.
  • Must maintain active Kansas bar licensure or seek admission immediately upon hire if licensed elsewhere.
  • Valid driver’s license required for locations not accessible by walking.

Salary and Benefits

Compensation ranges between $72,500 and $101,665 annually, varying by experience and qualifications, with room for salary discussions.
