Job description

Overview

WSP New Zealand is seeking a recent graduate to join its Pavements and Materials team at the Petone Research Centre in Lower Hutt as a Laboratory Technician. This role offers a strong entry point into applied science within a structured laboratory setting, where you will support bitumen testing and contribute to pavements research.

About the Organisation

WSP is a leading design, engineering, and environmental consultancy in Aotearoa New Zealand. The organisation works to help future-proof cities and the environment, with more than 2,000 specialists across 35 offices in the country. Globally, WSP brings together over 69,000 employees who work across transportation, infrastructure, environment, buildings, energy, water, mining, and metals.

WSP describes itself as a place where curiosity, new ideas, and diverse perspectives are welcomed. The company also highlights its recognition as one of the top five employers in Aotearoa New Zealand in Randstad’s latest employer survey and one of TIME’s 2023 top 100 companies globally for employees.

What You’ll Do

  • Carry out a range of tests on bitumen, asphalt, and other materials used in road construction.
  • Prepare samples, use laboratory equipment, and follow established testing methods carefully.
  • Maintain clear, accurate records of test results and related documentation.
  • Assist with the upkeep and calibration of laboratory instruments.
  • Contribute to ongoing improvements in laboratory systems and processes.

What We’re Looking For

This opportunity is aimed at someone early in their career who wants to apply a scientific background in a practical environment. The ideal candidate will enjoy hands-on laboratory work, working with materials and equipment, and learning how everyday materials perform.

  • A qualification in science, materials, chemistry, or a closely related discipline.
  • Comfort working in a process-led laboratory environment where precision matters.
  • A careful, methodical approach and the ability to follow documented procedures.
  • A naturally curious attitude and eagerness to learn.
  • A current NZ driver licence with a clean record.

Additional Information

WSP places health and safety at the centre of its operations. Employees are expected to comply with the organisation’s Health, Safety & Environment policy, as well as any client HSE requirements when working on client sites.

Some safety-sensitive roles may involve fieldwork in different environmental conditions, including remote or isolated areas, working alone, and exposure to inclement weather, within safe and reasonable limits.

WSP welcomes applications from people with disabilities and can provide accommodations during the recruitment process on request.

The organisation follows employment equity principles and will contact only shortlisted candidates. Unsolicited resumes from agencies are not accepted.
