Role Overview
This position involves carrying out microbiology testing on patient samples to support the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of infectious illnesses. The job calls for careful compliance with hospital procedures, biosafety rules, and quality standards so that results are reliable and delivered on time.
Core Duties
- Accept, identify, and prepare clinical samples such as blood, urine, swabs, sputum, and stool in line with standard laboratory procedures.
- Carry out microbiology testing, including culture work, sensitivity testing, staining, and organism identification for bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms.
- Make, prepare, and manage microbiology media, reagents, and other solutions used in testing.
- Use and look after laboratory instruments including microscopes, incubators, autoclaves, and analyzers.
- Log, review, and interpret test outcomes, keeping records accurate and updated in the laboratory information system.
- Apply infection prevention and biosafety practices consistently to avoid contamination and protect staff.
- Support quality control and quality assurance processes, including instrument calibration and validation.
- Work with doctors and other clinical staff by sharing microbiology findings that support patient care decisions.
- Monitor laboratory stock levels and alert supervisors when supplies are running low.
- Keep up with updated microbiology methods, laboratory protocols, and hospital guidelines.
Qualifications and Experience
The role requires a Diploma or BSc in Medical Laboratory Technology or a similar qualification. Candidates should bring at least 3 years of experience in a clinical microbiology laboratory, ideally within a hospital environment. A solid understanding of microbiology methods, aseptic technique, and clinical diagnostics is essential. The candidate must also be familiar with media selection for different microorganisms and staining procedures. Experience with standard lab equipment, careful documentation, and routine lab workflows is expected. Strong attention to detail, good communication, teamwork, and safe handling of biological specimens are important for success in this role.
