Kaitiaki - East Christchurch

About the Role

Kā Au Kahuraki, a collaborative initiative developed by the Ministry of Education, NZ Police and Mana Whenua, focuses on primary prevention and early support for tamariki and their whānau enrolled in early childhood education requiring additional health and social assistance. Operating since 2020 across East Christchurch in nine communities and supporting up to 60 Early Learning services, the programme aims to create equitable experiences and foster safe environments where tamariki can thrive.

We are looking to hire a full-time or part-time fixed term Kaitiaki until July 2027 to work closely with early childhood centres, kaiako (teachers), tamariki, and their families to promote holistic wellbeing through respectful and empowering connections.

Key Responsibilities

• Collaborate with Ministry of Education Kā Au Kahuraki team and partners to develop projects at neighbourhood and community hub levels.
• Build strong relationships with whānau, kaiako, and tamariki in designated early childhood centres to support holistic hauora (wellbeing).
• Identify community needs and initiate local initiatives, such as coffee carts at pick up times, to engage parents and connect them to relevant organisations.
• Complete required reporting to demonstrate the community impact and celebrate contributions to tamariki wellbeing.

Candidate Profile

• Possess experience and connections within the East Christchurch community.
• Previous work in early childhood education, NGOs, or not-for-profits is beneficial.
• Strong ability to build trust, form lasting relationships, and work independently with self-motivation.
• A background in social work or advocacy is an advantage but not mandatory.
