Job description
Role overview
Tate is looking for an early-career photographer who can adapt quickly, work to established processes, and collaborate effectively within a specialist arts and heritage setting. This is a chance to broaden your photographic practice while handling a varied mix of subjects in a distinctive environment.
In this role, you will build your understanding of cultural heritage photography and wider collections best practice, with support to strengthen your technical ability and room to develop your creative approach.
What you will do
Your assignments will include photographing works on paper and negatives, and supporting more senior photographers with complex artworks and conservation imaging. Beyond the studio, you will also capture gallery spaces, displayed artworks, portraits, editorial work, and event photography.
You will manage your own workflow from image capture through to upload, making sure accuracy, quality, and delivery deadlines are consistently met.
The position is based in London, but work will take place across all four Tate galleries, the art store, and external locations as needed.
Skills and experience needed
Applicants should have a recognised qualification, or comparable hands-on experience, showing practical and professional photography ability. You should be comfortable working with advanced digital cameras, artificial lighting, and editing software, and understand suitable file formats.
A solid technical grasp of photography is essential, along with a willingness to apply that knowledge in an arts and heritage context.
Contract and application notes
This is an 18-month fixed-term appointment.
Tate does not accept CVs. You must complete every section of the application form, including your education and employment history, and give specific examples that show what you have done and how you work.
AI writing tools may be helpful for brainstorming, but the content you submit must be your own. Generic or machine-like responses may reduce the strength of your application and could lead to rejection.
Please take your time, be truthful, and provide an authentic application.
