Job description

About Christophe Living

Christophe Living is a boutique atelier established in 1987, situated in Double Bay, NSW, specialising in French and European classical furniture restoration, reupholstery, and custom projects. Beyond furniture craftsmanship, the studio is expanding by creating a publishing imprint (Christophe Press), updating their online presence, and developing a design identity for Lumitalia, their Italian lighting distribution enterprise.

Role Overview

We seek a junior graphic designer to join the team onsite three days weekly, collaborating directly with the founder. The focus will be on projects requiring a refined aesthetic aligned with classical European design principles.

Key Responsibilities

  • Designing catalogues and brochures for furniture and lighting collections.
  • Creating editorial layouts for an upcoming book series under Christophe Press.
  • Designing homepage and landing pages for christopheliving.com.
  • Producing PDF collateral including book covers and product one-pagers.
  • Creating short-form videos for Instagram and YouTube platforms.
  • Managing web content through WordPress (Gutenberg), with training provided if needed.
  • Handling content management in Airtable is a plus.

Desired Aesthetic Sensibility

This position is suited for designers who value understatement and classical influences rather than bold, tech-industry styles. Inspirations include Hermès, Christian Liaigre, Rose Uniacke, and Axel Vervoordt. A strong affinity for serif typography, balanced layouts with generous whitespace, and meticulous attention to typographic details such as em-dashes and en-dashes are essential.

Requirements

  • Expertise in Adobe Creative Suite: InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop.
  • Familiarity with Canva for rapid design needs.
  • Strong skills in typography, layout, and composition.
  • Portfolio demonstrating print or editorial design work.
  • Availability to work onsite in Double Bay, NSW, three days per week.
  • Legal right to work in Australia.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience editing short-form videos for social media like Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts.
  • Knowledge of WordPress and Gutenberg editor.
  • Experience with Airtable.
  • Background in book or publication design.
  • Interest in classical furniture, interior design, or European design history.

Compensation & Working Conditions

  • Pay ranges from $35 to $42 per hour (casual rate with 25% loading), approximately $55,000 to $65,000 full-time equivalent.
  • Initial engagement of three days per week with opportunities to increase hours as the studio expands.
  • Collaborative work environment alongside the founder within a small atelier setup.
  • Conveniently located studio near Edgecliff and Double Bay train stations.

Application Instructions

Interested candidates should submit their portfolio, resume, and a brief statement about a designer whose work they admire and reasons why. Applications should be sent directly to the provided contact email.
