Job description

Position Overview

We are seeking applicants for the role of Junior Clinical Fellow (formerly Trust Doctor or SHO/FY2+ grade) in Acute Medicine at North Middlesex University Hospital, part of the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust. This role is based in North Central London and offers the unique opportunity to work within the Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) Unit following the hospital's recent integration into the Royal Free group, a time marked by service realignment to meet patient needs effectively.

Role Responsibilities

The successful candidate will manage patients in an ambulatory setting presenting with diverse medical conditions, referred through various pathways such as General Practitioners, London Ambulance Service, Emergency Department, NHS 111, and acute medicine services. The expanding SDEC team focuses on admission avoidance by utilizing condition-specific pathways for high-volume conditions including deep vein thrombosis, cellulitis, and pyelonephritis, supported by clear inclusion and exclusion criteria to optimize patient throughput and reduce emergency admissions.

  • Maintain up-to-date clinical knowledge and skills, adhering to infection control practices.
  • Communicate treatment options effectively and clearly to patients.
  • Prioritize clinical needs appropriately.
  • Demonstrate competence in bedside procedures, physical examinations, and patient history collection.
  • Develop investigation and treatment plans, managing complex cases and patients whose conditions deteriorate.
  • Fulfill Continuing Medical Education (CME) or Continuing Professional Development (CPD) requirements as stipulated by the relevant Royal College.

About North Middlesex University Hospital

The hospital is a medium-sized District General Hospital located in Edmonton, Enfield, serving a multicultural population predominantly from Enfield and Haringey. Many patients reside in some of the UK's most deprived wards, with a significant number born outside the UK, creating a dynamic yet challenging clinical environment.

Over the past decade, extensive rebuilding has modernized the hospital, now employing over 3,500 staff, many from local communities. The hospital encourages apprenticeships and maintains strong collaborations with local Health Watch bodies.

The hospital primarily serves acute cases, with over 90% of bed days allocated to emergency and SDEC admissions. It also offers tertiary care including services for HIV, Sickle Cell Disease, cancer treatment, radiotherapy, and local community Sexual Health Clinics.

Training and education are priorities, with the hospital operating as a training center for medical students from UCL, St George’s University Grenada, and for nursing and midwifery students from Middlesex and City Universities.
