Job description

Overview

Firestorm is looking for a Junior Art Director to guide creative direction at a high level while also handling the company’s everyday visual production across marketing, events, and executive communications. The role focuses on defining how the brand is presented across every customer and internal touchpoint, combining strategic creative thinking with strong hands-on execution.

This position reports into Marketing and is a practical specialist role with direct responsibility for creative output and strong visibility across the organization.

Contract arrangement

This is a 1099 engagement, with a possibility of moving into a full-time role later.

Key responsibilities

The role includes leading design work across a range of ongoing deliverables, such as brand refresh materials, social visuals, presentation decks, product one-pagers and slick sheets, event signage and trade show collateral, product sticker concepts, campaign posters, and merchandise.

Creative direction and brand strategy

You will help define a consistent visual direction that reflects Firestorm’s identity and helps set the brand apart in the defense technology space. The role calls for more than execution alone; it also requires creative judgment, strategic thinking, and the ability to help shape brand decisions in partnership with marketing and leadership.

Brand stewardship

You will be expected to apply the brand system consistently across internal and external assets, keep templates and asset libraries organized, and maintain production files so other team members can work quickly while staying aligned with the brand. You will also prepare and transfer files for print and digital production vendors.

Qualifications

The company requires U.S. citizenship because of ITAR rules, along with the ability to obtain and keep a Department of Defense security clearance. Candidates should bring at least 3 years of professional experience in graphic design or art direction, plus a portfolio that shows strong work in brand identity, typography, layout, hierarchy, illustration, and composition across both digital and print formats.

Applicants should have experience building visual brand identities, be comfortable using Adobe Creative Suite tools such as Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop, and work well in Figma. The role also calls for independent work habits, the ability to manage several projects at once, consistent deadline delivery, a strong eye for detail, high standards for craft, and excellent written and verbal communication.

Preferred background

Additional value will be given to candidates with experience in technical B2B or B2G environments, photo illustration, photo compositing or photomontage, vectorizing, and startup settings.

Work setup

The role is fully remote, though there is an option to work from the San Diego, California headquarters if preferred. Regular collaboration is expected with executive, marketing, and engineering teams, and some travel may be required from time to time.

Compensation and hours

The estimated pay range is $50 to $60 per hour in the United States. The role starts at up to 20 hours per week, with the possibility of additional hours later. Final pay will be confirmed in the offer letter together with defined objectives, milestones, deliverables, and expectations. The company notes that the rate estimate reflects factors such as experience, education, certifications, specialized skills, geography, and business needs, and may change as internal compensation practices or market conditions evolve.

The company is building an expeditionary manufacturing ecosystem that supports modular, mission-adaptable unmanned aerial systems, additively manufactured repair parts, and the software needed to connect point solutions into a network of strategic assets. The goal is to create adaptable resilience through defense logistics.

Export control and eligibility

To comply with U.S. export control laws, including ITAR and EAR, applicants must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, protected individual under 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3), or otherwise eligible to obtain the required authorization from the U.S. Department of State or U.S. Department of Commerce.
