Role overview
Lookout Housing and Health Society provides housing and support services to adults living with little or no income, especially those who have very limited housing or support options. The organization aims to keep barriers low so people can access help more easily.
Work location and schedule
This position is based at Canada's Best Value Inn in Langley, British Columbia, Canada. The role follows a Monday to Friday schedule with shifts from 10:00 to 18:00. Each shift is 7.5 hours long, and rest days are consecutive. The timetable may be adjusted with two weeks' notice.
Employment details
This is a full-time, permanent position. The probationary or qualifying period is 488 hours, with reviews at the midpoint and at the end of that period.
Compensation
The wage range is $25.18 to $26.84 per hour, depending on seniority as outlined in the collective agreement.
What the role involves
The Janitor / Maintenance Worker reports to the Site Manager and is expected to follow the mission, philosophy, and Code of Ethics of Lookout Housing and Health Society. The position is responsible for keeping the property clean and functional, both indoors and outdoors, and for carrying out ongoing janitorial and maintenance work across the premises.
Key duties
- Carry out routine cleaning tasks such as sweeping, washing, waxing floors, and cleaning and disinfecting surfaces.
- Collect garbage and empty recycling bins.
- Keep building equipment monitored and maintained.
- Handle repairs and general upkeep on the property, including suites, plumbing, landscaping, and related maintenance work.
- Support onboarding of new staff, supervise volunteers, and coordinate with team members to help ensure the facility meets guest needs.
- Perform work primarily indoors, with some outdoor tasks as required.
- Remain attentive during all working hours; sleeping on shift is not allowed.
- Help meet health and safety requirements and contribute to the overall safety program.
Qualifications and skills
The role calls for at least Grade 12 education and two years of recent related experience, or a comparable mix of education, training, and experience. A Building Service Worker Diploma is considered an asset, as is Crisis Intervention Skills Training. Candidates must hold a current Occupational First Aid Level 1 certificate. Strong interpersonal skills, documentation ability, organization, stress management, and the capacity to work independently or as part of a team are important. The job also requires clear boundaries with clients and workers, the ability to work with disadvantaged and challenging adults in a diverse setting, and the physical and mental stamina to handle job tasks and equipment. Applicants should have at least two years of sobriety if there are concerns related to alcohol or drug use. A criminal record check for the vulnerable sector is required.
