Role overview
This permanent full-time post supports the safe, reliable operation of Aberdeen City Council educational properties. The role is based in Aberdeen City, AB22 8UR, United Kingdom, and involves working closely with colleagues across Integrated Children’s and Family Services, Facilities Management, Building Services, and any relevant subcontractors to ensure day-to-day services run smoothly.
PVG membership note
For roles that need PVG membership, the Council requires candidates to cover the PVG membership cost from 1 April 2023 onward, but only where the full-time equivalent salary is £30,000 or more. For teaching posts and roles at Grade 10 and above, this threshold is currently £30,030 per year or £16.50 per hour. The Council will initially pay the PVG fee and recover it from the employee’s first full month’s salary. The amount is £18 for existing PVG scheme members and £59 for non-members.
What the job involves
The position provides essential frontline support to help maintain secure, well-functioning school buildings and related facilities. It includes collaboration with internal teams and external contractors to deliver the required service standards across multiple sites.
Minimum profile
No formal qualifications are required for this job. However, a background in a trade or previous experience in building management would be an advantage. Candidates must also either already hold, or be able to obtain within 6 months of starting, a recognised qualification covering the safe maintenance and operation of swimming pool plant, such as STA or Train-CIMSPA. A suitable level of health and fitness is also needed to carry out manual frontline service tasks.
Skills and experience needed
The successful candidate should be able to work well in a team and also use their own judgment when needed. They should understand general building maintenance, be comfortable managing security across multiple buildings, and be capable of operating access control systems, intruder and fire alarm systems, sprinkler systems, and CCTV. Experience with janitorial and cleaning equipment and materials is expected, along with the ability to run boiler plant for heating, hot water, and swimming pool plant. The role also involves manual handling and working at height.
