Role overview

The IT Infrastructure Administrator is responsible for keeping Ontario Northland’s mixed technology environment dependable, secure, and efficient. This includes both on-premises and cloud-based systems. The position supports core infrastructure services such as servers, networks, identity management, backups, and endpoint administration, while also watching system performance and availability. The role also involves hands-on troubleshooting, creating technical documentation, and supporting ongoing improvements that keep business operations running smoothly.

Key responsibilities

  • Find, assess, and fix infrastructure issues across IBM i platforms, servers, networks, endpoints, and hybrid cloud systems by using logs and monitoring data to determine the root cause.
  • Resolve network availability and performance concerns affecting switches, access points, gateways, cabling, and device-to-device communication in both on-site and cloud-connected environments.
  • Handle problems related to authentication, user access, and permissions within Active Directory, domain services, and Microsoft 365 identity integration.
  • Set up, oversee, and maintain network tools, VoIP systems, and print services so connectivity and communication remain reliable.
  • Support desktops, mobile devices, and other endpoint environments when users encounter issues accessing corporate tools and services.
  • Administer Linux and IBM i server environments, making sure systems remain healthy, stable, patched, and high-performing.
  • Apply and verify updates, patches, and configuration changes in line with security requirements and operational expectations.
  • Oversee backup and recovery activities across infrastructure platforms, including job monitoring, recovery testing, and disaster recovery support.
  • Assist with specialized software by gathering requirements, completing installations, checking compatibility, and creating documentation for service desk use.
  • Maintain infrastructure documentation, support planning and lifecycle improvements, research enhancements, and provide technical advice to IT colleagues and business teams.

Requirements

  • A college diploma in Information Technology, Computer Systems, or a closely related area.
  • At least 2 years of experience supporting Windows and Linux operating systems in a live production environment, including setup, patching, monitoring, and troubleshooting.
  • Practical experience with network infrastructure such as switches, access points, gateways, cabling, and connectivity troubleshooting.
  • Direct experience installing hardware and supporting physical infrastructure.
  • Background supporting endpoint environments, including desktops, mobile devices, and specialized workstations.
  • Exposure to IBM i (AS/400) systems is an asset, especially in areas such as operating system administration, storage, security, backup/recovery, and high availability.
  • Experience with virtualization and hybrid on-premises/cloud environments is an asset.
  • Experience with backup and recovery tools, restore validation, and disaster recovery preparedness is an asset.
  • Experience with specialized software installation and support, including coordination with vendors and creation of standardized procedures, is an asset.
  • Working knowledge of enterprise infrastructure technologies including servers, virtualization, networking, endpoints, backup solutions, and cloud services.
  • Strong analytical ability and troubleshooting skills for solving complex issues that involve multiple systems.
  • Ability to explain technical matters clearly to non-technical users, IT teams, and vendors.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize priorities and manage several tasks in a production setting, including during outages or incidents.
  • Comfort working both independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong written documentation skills for building procedures and technical standards.
  • Good judgment and discretion when handling sensitive systems and information.
  • A valid Class G driver’s license and the ability to travel between locations when needed.
  • Willingness to complete job-related training and certifications.
  • Ability to work in operational or industrial settings and perform physical tasks such as lifting, cabling, and hardware setup.
  • Flexibility to work beyond standard hours for maintenance, upgrades, or incident response.
  • Strong attention to detail, adaptability to changing technology, and a commitment to health and safety.
